Vorlage:Infobox dam The Millennium Dam, also referred to as Grand Millennium Dam, is an under construction gravity dam on the Blue Nile River about Vorlage:Convert east of Sudan in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region of Ethiopia.[1] The dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa when completed.[2]
Background
On 31 March 2011, a $4.8 billion contract was awarded to Salini Costruttori and the dam's foundation stone was laid on 2 April 2011 by Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.[3] Ethiopian plans to fund the entire cost of the dam internally and has issued a bond offering. Design
The dam will be a Vorlage:Convert tall, Vorlage:Convert long gravity-type composed of roller-compacted concrete and will have two power houses, each on either side of the spillway. The right power house will contain ten 350 MW Francis turbine-generators while the left will contain five. Supporting the dam and reservoir will be a Vorlage:Convert long and Vorlage:Convert high saddle dam.[2] The dam's reservoir will have a volume of Vorlage:Convert.[3]
