Global Underground
Global Underground is a series of progressive house compilation albums reflecting a performance of a high profile DJ in venues from around the world. The name of the series gives reference to the albums' removal from typical mainstream dance music and the fact that each album is based on parties held around the world, which often influences the tone of the music. The series originally started in 1995 by Andrew Archer and Scott Dawson with selling bootleg tapes of the likes of Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, but it was not until 1996, when the first official CD was released. Since then the series gained huge success and became a landmark in the progressive house world. Featured music is mostly progressive house, but there is some house, trance and breakbeat releases. Global Underground is arguably one of the first high-profile DJ mix series that has enjoyed international success.
There are consistent characteristics in almost every album in the series including:
- Each album being mixed by a globe-trotting DJ.
- The prominent influence of the location on the music and packaging.
- Extensive sleeve notes describing local clubbing scene and/or venue.
- Each album consisting of two discs.
- The song list is edited from the complete set based on a retrospective view of the performance.
The first five installments were live recorded from respective clubs, while the rest is mixed and recorded in a studio.
Global Underground is also the name of the UK based label established in 2003, after the original label Boxed went bankrupt.
