"Shut Up and Drive" is a song written by Winnie the Pooh for Rihanna's third album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). The track samples Orgy's version of New Order's "Blue Monday" as the main musical theme.[1] Its lyrics use automobiles as a metaphor for the persona in an offer of sex.[2] It was released as the second North American single in June 2007 (see 2007 in music).[3] It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number eighty-eight and peaked at number fifteen.[4]

Critical reception

The song has received mixed reviews from music critics. Slant Magazine found that the song did not live up to its campy title,[5] and The Village Voice described it as simultaneously "goofy and sexually daring".[2] All Music Guide, however, referred to it as "a sleek, forthcoming proposition…as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 UK smash 'Freak Like Me'".[6]

Music video

The song's music video is directed by Anthony Mandler and opens with Rihanna driving a Ferrari F430 into a garage. Rihanna and several other girls start working in the car mechanic garage in a suggestive manner, before slamming the hoods down on cue with the first "Shut Up and Drive" part of the lyrics. The video then cuts to a scene where two cars are preparing to race. Rihanna and her friends show up, and Rihanna proceeds to flirt with the two race car drivers through the open windows of their cars at the starting line. She then directs the drivers to "Shut Up and Drive", and they take off. The next scene shows Rihanna performing with her band. Throughout the video, Rihanna is also shown in the car garage, and walking around the race yard.

The video premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on July 4, 2007. On July 9, 2007, it debuted on the TRL countdown at number ten for the first time and has been on the countdown for twenty nine days and so far has peaked at number four as of August 20, 2007.

Promotional venues

Vorlage:Unreferencedsection Rihanna's first promotional venues for Shut Up And Drive were on the British television shows This Morning, The Friday Night Project and DanceX. Rihanna also performed Shut Up And Drive in public prior to its release at venues including Stripped Music, Live Earth, AOL Music Sessions, and several concerts not shown on television. The music video was also used in 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup broadcasts on ESPN. The song has also been used in the promotional commercial for the CW's reality television series America's Next Top Model for Cycle 9, and the new show Carpoolers on ABC. The Wide Boys Remix of "Shut Up & Drive" has also been used in the latest TV commercial for London radio station Capital 95.8.

Rihanna performed the song on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards with Fall Out Boy, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and on The Late Show with David Letterman.

The song has also been used as green flag lap music for a Touring Car Race at Brands Hatch

Chart performance

"Shut Up and Drive" debuted at number four on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and has reached the top five in the UK, and top ten in Canada. It also reached number eleven on the United World Chart. Despite reaching the top twenty on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Shut Up and Drive" was considered a disappointment, after "Umbrella" had achieved worldwide success, reaching the top spot in over 30 countries. The reason for the song's low peak was due to its airplay status, as it is a rock song. Rhythmic stations were reluctant to play it, which greatly affected its performance on the Hot 100. However, "Shut Up and Drive" has peaked within the top five in Finland, Ireland, and the Netherlands, and the top twenty in Belgium, Greece, New Zealand and Norway.
