She co-wrote the pop song with George Astasio, Jason Pebworth, Jon Shave, Kyle Abrahams and Peter Ighile. The track was produced by The Invisible Men with Parker and James. It was released as a download in November 2010 in the United Kingdom with a physical release in January 2011. It was later released as a download in the United States with a physical release at a future date. It has so far peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, and number eleven in Ireland.

Background

"Do It Like a Dude" was written by Jessie J, Kyle Abrahams, Peter Abrahams, George Astasio, Jason Pebworth and Jonathan Shave, while being produced by Parker & James and The Invisible Men. After it was written, Jessie J wanted to give the track to Rihanna, but instead decided that the song would be her "middle finger up to the industry" in what she does not want to sound like.

Critical reception

The song has received generally positive reviews from music critics.

Nick Levine of Digital Spy Blog gave the song a positive review stating:

Now here's how to make an entrance into the capricious, peacock-packed party of pop. "I can do it like a dude, grab my crotch, wear my hat down low like you," announces this hype-hogging songbird on her debut single, while also cussing like a delinquent, rapping like someone who's (sic) actual surname is Cornish has no business doing, and offering one or two indications that, y'know, she can sing a bit too..

Erika Berlin of Rolling Stone also gave it a positive review (3.5 out of 5 stars), saying:

Jessie J is no girlie girl — she's a Brit newcomer who wears her hat low and often avoids pants. The 22-year-old already has a sugary hit on her resume (she co-penned Miley's "Party in the U.S.A."), but on her debut single she stomps her way across the pond, presumably with tongue in cheek: "Do It Like a Dude" finds her grabbing her crotch and dropping MF-bombs over rock riffs while calling her girls "sugar" and throwing in a brawling pop chorus. Fierce!

Chart performance

"Do It Like a Dude" first debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 25 on 28 November 2010 as the third highest new entry of the week. Following a decline during December, the single climbed 13 places to number 21 on 26 December and again climbed a further 3 places the week after to a number 18. Following the announcement that Jessie J had topped the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll, "Do It Like a Dude" propelled 13 places into the top 10 at number 5 on 9 January 2011. On its second week in the Top 10, the single climbed 3 places to a current peak of number 2; being beaten to the top spot only by Bruno Mars' "Grenade". To date the single has sold over 300,000 copies in the UK.

The single also saw a chart placement on the Irish Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 11.
