Oppressor was a four-piece Technical Death Metal band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. They formed in 1991 and finished in 1999. They were signed to Olympic Recordings and had released three albums, their last being Elements of Corrosion which was released in 1998. Three of the band's members (Tim King, Adam Zadel and Tom Schofield) would go on to form Alternative Metal band SOiL with Broken Hope's guitarist Shaun Glass.

Overview

Brief History

Oppressor was started in May, 1991 by Tim King and Adam Zadel. A month later, they found another guitarist in Jim Stopper and a drummer in Tom Schofield, completing the bands line up. They then went on to record their first demo in 1991, entitled World Abomination, which got them little attention. However, this changed when their second demo As Blood Flows (1993), which got them a record deal with Red Light Records. This deal then allowed them to release their first full-length album, entitled Solstice of Oppression, in 1994. However, shortly after this, their label went bankrupt and the band were forced to find another label again. Whilst looking for one, the band did a one-off live album/compilation album with Megalithic Records, entitled Oppression Live/As Blood Flows. They then managed to score a record deal with Olympic Recordings and went on to release another album, entitled Agony. In 1997 all the band members, bar Jim Stopper, formed an Alternative Metal side project called SOiL along with Broken Hope guitarist Shaun Glass and Ryan McCombs. Oppressor then went on to release what would be their final album, entitled Elements of Corrosion, in 1998. In 1999 the band decided to part ways, as the side-project SOiL was getting much bigger than Oppressor.

Musical Style

Oppressor fused together Death Metal with pianos, acoustic guitars and various other instruments not ussually accosiated with their genre, leading them to gain the term Technical Death Metal. They were heavily influenced by bands like Morbid Angel, Death, Gorguts and Suffocation. The lyrical theme's of the band ussually centred around death, suffering and moral depravity.
