Sugar Hill (Manhattan)

Sugar Hill is an neighborhood in the northern part of Harlem, Manhattan, New York City defined by 155th St. to the north, 145st to the south, Edgecombe Ave. to the east, and Amsterdam Ave. to the west. It was a popular residential area for wealthy African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance, including W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell, and Duke Ellington (who mentioned it in Take the A Train. Sugar Hill was made a municipal historic district in by the New York City Landmarks Commission in 2000.
