Theo Bleckmann (* 28. Mai 1966 in Dortmund) ist ein deutscher Jazz-Sänger und Komponist, der auch im Bereich der klassischen Musik hervorgetreten ist.

Leben und Wirken

Der jüngst mit dem JAZZ ECHO der deutschen Phono Akademie ausgezeichtnete und Grammy nomminierte Sänger und Komponist Theo Bleckmann, arbeitet im Grenzbereich von Jazz, Neuer, elektronischer Musik und Performance. Der seit 1989 in New York lebende Künstler wurde vom Magazin New Yorker als New York’s “lokaler Kult Favorit” bezeichnet, die New York Times gab ihm das Prädikat “excellent” und OUT Magazine bezeichnete Bleckmann als “einen Sänger der erst kürzlich vom Himmel gefallen ist”.


In Deutschland geboren, erhielt Bleckmann seit seinem 8. Lebensjahr Klavierunterricht und erhielt 1987 seine ersten Preise bei “Jugend Jazzt” und beim “Bundeswettbewerb für Gesang” in Berlin. Es schloss sich ein Studium bei Sheila Jordan am New York am City College und an der Manhattan School of Music an, an der er nun selber seit 2008 Jazzgesang unterrichtet. Seit seiner Übersiedlung nach New York tritt er international als Bandleader und Solist auf und wirkte in New York an Radio-, Film- und Theaterproduktionen mit, wie z. B. Space Alien Sprache für “Men in Black” und atmosphärische Vokalparts für “Star Trek Envoy”. Die Liste seiner Kollaboratoren umfasst: Laurie Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Dave Douglas, Philip Glass, Kirk Nurock, John Zorn, Michael Tilson Thomas, St. Louis Symphony, Bang on a Can ,die Merce Cunningham Dance Company, die Mark Morris Dance Group und viele mehr. Eine enge musikalische Zusammenarbeit verbindet ihn mit dem japanischen Komponisten und Pianisten Fumio Yasuda (gemeinsame Aufnahmen für Winter & Winter »Las Vegas Rhapsody«, »Berlin – Songs of love and war, peace and exile«, »Schumann’s Favored Bar Songs«) und dem amerikanischen Perkussionisten John Hollenbeck sowie dem Gitarristen Ben Monder. Zudem ist er seit 1994 einer der Hauptakteure im Vocal Ensemble der Performance-Künstlerin Meredith Monk. Theo Bleckmanns Interesse gilt gleichermaßen dem Komponieren: so entwickelte, schrieb und realisierte er als Klangimprovisator zahlreiche Film- und Theatermusiken. Bleckmanns Gedankenfülle und Artikulation über Musik und Performance haben zu Anerkennung in außergewöhnlichen Sparten geführt, wie z. B. durch ein Interview geführt von Radio-Größe Terry Gross für “Fresh Air” oder durch einen Artikel für John Zorns Buch aus seiner Arcana Serie, Volume III. Darüberhinaus trat er vor kurzem zusammen mit Laurie Anderson in der David Letterman Show auf.

Inspiriert von Arte Povera, einer italienischen Kunstbewegung der 60er Jahre welche Installationen mit den eifachsten Mitteln und "ärmsten" Materialien kreierte. Bleckmann verwendet ausschliesslich akustische Instrumente, zu denen neben der Stimme Spielzeug, Shruti, Glas, Wasser, und Drehleihern gehören.

• "Origami" (Songlines, 2001) erhielt 4 1/2 Sterne im amerikanischen "Down Beat Magazin".

Hello Earth! - The music of Kate Bush
Dieses Projekt ist eine Bearbeitung von Stücken der britischen Sängerin und Komponistin Kate Bush. Begleitet wird Bleckmann von Schlagzeuger John Hollenbeck, Bassist Skuli Sverisson, Keyboarder Henry Hey und Multi-Instrumentalist Caleb Burhans and der Viola, Gitarre und Laptop. Eine Studioaufnahme ist für 2011 geplant. Recording is scheduled for early 2011.

"Twelve Songs by Charles Ives" with Kneebody Twelve Songs by Charles Ives with Kneebody, (Winter&Winter, 2008) wurde 2010 für die Kategorie "bestes klassisches crossover Album" für einen Grammy nominiert.

Bleckmann/Hollenbeck Duo Bleckmann und Schlagzeuger und Komponist John Hollenbeck teilen eine langjährige Kollaboration und nahmen auch etliche Platten miteinander auf. Als Duo "Static Still" (GPE records 2000) und mit Hollenbeck's Quartet Lucy (CRI 2001)
Weiters sind Bleckmann und Hollenbeck gleichwertige Mitglieder der Band "Refuge Trio" und Bleckamnn ist Mitglied von "John Hollenbeck's Large Ensemble", welches ausschliesslich Kompositionen von Hollenbeck featured.

Audiopool - Duo mit Sissel Vera Pettersen Audiopool ist eine Kollaboration von 2 Musikern mit ähnlicher Denkweise. Beide Sänger verwenden die Stimme als Instrument und integrieren live Elektronik, eindringlichen Kompositionen, Improvisationen und Sound-Landschaften. Audiopool premierte im Sommer 2008 am Jazz Festival Kopenhagen, wo sie Miniatur Landschaften aus Sound und Video erzeugten.

Refuge Trio takes its name from the Joni Mitchell song "Refuge of the Roads". The collaborative trio was formed to play at the '2002 Wall-to-Wall Joni Mitchell Marathon Concert' at Symphony Space in NYC. Since then, they have continued to explore music with mystery and exuberance. They fashion a transformative experience for the audience with their music and spirit. Bleckmann's collection of showtunes, Las Vegas Rhapsody - The Night They Invented Champagne with the Chamber Orchester Basel and pianist, arranger, Fumio Yusada (Winter&Winter, 2006) has been described as "the most transcendent vocal album in many a moon", by Francis Davis in The Village Voice. Theo Bleckmann's second collaboration with Yusada is an extension of his love for music from his native country Germany surrounding the themes of love, war and peace. Moss is a vocal ensemble composed of some of New York's most diverse and interesting (jazz) singers (Theo Bleckmann, Peter Eldridge, Kate McGarry, Lauren Kinhan and Luciana Souza). The repertoire features each artist's individual approach to music and creates a unique collective at the same time. Audiopool is a collaboration between two eerily like-minded musicians: Sissel Vera Pettersen from Norway and New York-based Theo Bleckmann. Both singers use their voices as an instrument incorporating live electronic processing and looping to create mercurial and haunting compositions, improvisations and soundscapes. Audiopool premiered in the summer of 2008 at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Using only accessible instruments (a FLIP HD camera and household lighting) they extend their sensibilities to creating miniature vocal/visual landscapes while translating their live electronic vocal manipulations to video. ==KOMPOSITIONEN== Im Auftrag des Whitney Museum of American Art komponierte Bleckmann ein Musikperformance-Stück nach Kenneth Goldsmith' Text Fidget. Mit dem Performancekünstler Lynn Book schuf er das Stück Mercuria, das von Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago produziert wurde. Mit Valeria Vasilevski und dem Komponisten Eric Salzman schrieb er die Oper The True Last Words of Dutch Schultz, in der er den Gangster Dutch Schultz spielte.

Als Klangimprovisator arbeitete er für zahlreiche Film-, Fernseh- und Theaterproduktionen. So war er die Stimme der Aliens in Spielbergs Men in Black sowie in Star Trek: Envoy. Auch hat er Werke von David Lang und anderen Komponisten, u.a. gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble Bang on a Can interpretiert. Für ihn haben Michael Gordon, Phil Kline, David Lang, Ikue Mori, Kirk Nurock und Julia Wolfe Kompositionen geschrieben.

Preise und Auszeichnungen

Seine künstlerischen Leistungen wurden mit zahlreichen Preisen und Auszeichnungen gewürdigt, darunter dem Presse Award for Outstanding Talent und dem ASCAP-Gershwin Award für seine Komposition "Chorale #1 for Eight Voices". 
Seine gemeinsam mit der Band Kneebody bei Winter & Winter erschienene CD »Twelve Songs by Charles Ives« war 2010 für einen Grammy in der Kategorie „Best Classical Crossover Album“ nominiert. Bleckmann wurde u.a. mit dem Bessie Award, dem Gershwin Award (für die Komposition Chorale #1 for Eight Voices) und Preisen der Arts International, des Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art und der New York Foundation for the Arts ausgezeichnet.
