The video starts with Beyoncé writing "9-4-81 B'Day" on a mirror, refering to her birthday (September 4 1981). She then meets up with her 'three best friends', Kelly, Michelle and Solange. They enter a club where a crowd greets them and claps upon their arrival. Once inside, the music stops and the crowd inside asks who it is that just entered. Beyoncé responds "It's B!" and the music starts again. The video from here on out is a dance video with sharp choreography and signature dance moves some of which are inspired by the Rich Mans Frug from Sweet Charity. Beyoncé, Kelly, Michelle and Solange are seen occassionally on a couch in a VIP section of the club. Other scenes show Beyoncé on the dance floor with male dance partners. The video uses the extended mix which has a specific dance sequence that is performed by dancers and Beyoncé on several of the moves.
