"Umbrella" is the first single released from Rihanna’s third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad. It features Def Jam CEO Jay-Z. The single topped the charts worldwide and has simultaneously topped the UK (where it topped the chart at number one for ten consecutive weeks and is currently the biggest song of 2007 so far[1]) Canadian, Irish, German, Slovakian, United States, Australian, New Zealand, Polish, Austrian, Spanish, Belgian, Norwegian and Swiss charts, along with the United World Chart. It won Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.

Background and single release

The song was written by The-Dream for Rihanna. According to the songwriters, the song was offered to many labels before being recorded by Rihanna.

The beat from Umbrella is called Vintage Funk Kit 03 and is a loop taken from Apple's Garageband, a musical production application.

In many parts of the U.S., the single was released on March 28, 2007,[2] although its official release date was March 29, 2007.[3] The song premiered on the New York radio station Hot 97 and on her official website on March 29 at 5:00pm EST.

It premiered on UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on the Scott Mills show. In the UK, the song was released digitally on May 14, 2007 with the physical CD release following on May 28 2007, one week before the album was released.[4][5]

Many major radio stations in Los Angeles, Boston and New York City have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap. On the issue dated April 28, 2007, the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one. It eventually went on to spend seven weeks at number one before falling to number two and is Rihanna’s fifth top ten Hot 100 single in under two years.

Remixes

Chris Brown wrote an answer song titled "Cinderella" with the same melody but different lyrics. It had been released to radio stations by June 12, 2007. In it his verse replaces Rihanna’s second verse, but they share the third verse and the final chorus. His chorus, however, differs from Rihanna's: instead of "You can stand under my umbrella", he sings "You can be my Cinderella". It is officially titled "Cinderella Under the Umbrella". The remix was largely ignored by Pop stations, where listeners preferred the original, but enjoyed more airplay than the original on Urban stations.

The Chris Brown and Lil' Mama versions have enjoyed the most airplay. These two popular remixes were leaked to urban radio stations and are sometimes played more than the original version.

Jody den Broeder, The Lindbergh Palace, Seamus Haji and Paul Emanuel provided dance mixes for the song. These remixes helped the song achieve the number one position on both Billboard's club and dance radio charts.

Cover versions

Indie singer-songwriter Scott Simons released a version of Umbrella on Myspace and his website which soon became an internet favorite and received radio play on several stations in the U.S. and overseas.[6]

Upcoming singer Mariè Digby released an acoustic version of the song through iTunes under Hollywood Records on August 3, 2007. The single was previously released on the Los Angeles based radio station STAR 98.7 as a 'You Oughta Hear' feature. Canadian ska punk band illScarlett and Terra Naomi, a singer who was discovered on YouTube, have also recorded acoustic versions.

Pop singer and actress Mandy Moore performed her own version of the song in a slower, more ballad-like arrangement. Moore stated that while she is not the biggest fan of pop music, "...you just can't deny how melodic this song is."[7] John West has also covered the song with acoustic guitars and a cello, providing a dramatic melodic version that is reminiscent in style to John Mayer.[8]

During a show on their Projekt Revolution tour, My Chemical Romance did a brief cover of the chorus.[9] Ross Copperman, an American singer, performed a cover of the song, using only his voice and a piano. Additionally, "Umbrella" has been covered by Biffy Clyro during an appearance on Radio One's Live Lounge.[10]

Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls, despite her blog entries questioning the quality of the song, has covered "Umbrella" numerous times live, aided by a beatboxer and mandolin.

The Italian pop-punk band Vanilla Sky recorded Umbrella for an exclusive on their MySpace in September 2007, receiving over 30,000 plays in its first week online.[11]

Indie pop group Tegan and Sara did a cover of the song at a show in Kelowna, British Columbia and Calgary, Alberta in 2007.

J-pop group KinKi Kids are covering Umbrella on their Greatest Hits tour.

Swedish metal band Lillasyster made a hard metal version of Umbrella and also a video for their version of the song under Gain Music Entertainment. This version of the song has received a lot of attention in Sweden, Norway, Germany and even in Thailand, and went on Swedish national radio in September 2007 and received radio play on several stations in Sweden. The video is due to be released on October 10th on Myspace, Lillasyster's website and MTV and Swedish MTV did a piece on the making of the video which was aired October 3rd and October 7th[12].

British pop band, McFly, covered Umbrella for their latest single, The Heart Never Lies, which is due to be released on October 22, 2007.

Promotion

Rihanna made formal appearances all over the United Kingdom. She also performed three of her new songs in Preston at the BBC Radio 1 One Big Weekend event. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. In Germany she performed the song exclusively at Viva Live and the 42nd edition of the highly popular chart show The Dome. "Umbrella" was also performed live on Live Earth, GMTV, Loose Women, Blue Peter, Kiss Concert 2007, Sprint Concert, Zoopotia Show, Stripped Show, Canadian Idol, 106 & Park, The View and two unknown places. Before Rihanna performed Umbrella live on Live Earth, BBC Radio 1, Stripped Show, Zoopotia Show and the Kiss Concert 2007, the opening interpolated "Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer. She is to go on tour in December.

Music video

The music video was shot on April 13, 2007[13] and was directed by Chris Applebaum. It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at http://www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007. It remained at number one for eight weeks.

The video starts with Jay-Z rapping in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen apparently walking around en pointe. Later, Rihanna is seen nude and painted silver (which some people reference as based off of Madonna's music video 'Fever'). In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain, where Jay-Z was rapping at the beginning of the video.

There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on April 30, 2007 on MTV is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On May 14, 2007, the "Umbrella" video premiered on BET’s 106 & Park at number nine and has peaked at number four as of May 30, 2007 , Rihanna’s first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "Pon de Replay", in 2005. In this version, she can also be seen walking en pointe and the added water effects can be seen. On May 1, 2007, "Umbrella" debuted on MTV’s Total Request Live at number ten, and by May 9 it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 15 days and has been on the countdown for 38 days, its no longer eligible for voting online due to "Shut Up and Drive".

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards nominees were announced at 2PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, and "Umbrella" was nominated for 5 awards, including Video of the Year, Monster Single of the Year and Female Artist of the Year.[14] The song won Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year.

The music video for "Umbrella" became the most played video ever on MTV Poland, beating Madonna’s "Hung Up".

Chart performance

"Umbrella" became the first song by a female artist to debut at number one on the official UK Singles Chart solely on download sales. The song entered the charts at number one on May 20, 2007[15] selling 34,164 downloads that week. This also made Rihanna achieve her first UK number-one single. "Umbrella" also broke the UK record for the most consecutive weeks at number one in the 21st century with ten weeks, beating Gnarls Barkley’s 2006 hit, "Crazy", which spent nine weeks at number one. Rihanna also became only the seventh artist in the history of the UK Singles Chart to score a tenth week at number one.[16] After ten weeks at number one it has reached sales of 362,054. [17] "Umbrella" is the longest-running number one since "Love Is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 (spent 15 weeks).[1] On July 29, 2007, "Umbrella" fell two places to number three on the official UK chart, beaten by Timbaland’s "The Way I Are".

In Australia, the single entered the ARIA Singles Chart at number one and remained there for six weeks, becoming Rihanna’s second number-one single (after "SOS"). It debuted at number one on the ARIA Urban Chart and has remained there for four weeks. While the song was at the top of the Urban Charts, two other songs (SOS and Unfaithful), from her previous album, were also on the chart.

On the issue dated June 9, "Umbrella" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a rise from number forty-one to number one; the song was downloaded 277,000 times in the United States, the highest debut-week sum since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.[18] It was also Rihanna’s second number-one song on the chart, after "SOS"Referenzfehler: Es fehlt ein schließendes </ref>. It reached number one on the United World Chart and remained there for 10 consequtive weeks. The single has managed to get 6.7 million points so far. It is so far 2007's second most successful song on the United World Chart behind Nelly Furtado's Say It Right with 7.6 million points.

In Latin America, the single debuted at number thirty-nine in the Latin America Top 40, and in its gaining points, it is currently peaking at number two,[19] the single has become Rihanna’s biggest hit in the region, her only top 10 single and has give her the honor of being the only Barbadian artist to reach the top 10. In Paraguay, the single has peak at number one[20] while in Ecuador the single has peak at number two[21], becoming Rihanna’s biggest hit in both countries.

In Argentina, "Umbrella" became Rihanna's breakthrough and her only hit song, peaking so far at number two.

In Spain five weeks after "Umbrella's" debut, the song reached top one in "Los 40 principales", which is the most important chart in Spain. It also reached number one on the Download Chart, and it's certified 3x Platinum with 60,000 downloads. It is having heavy airplay in other radio stations like Europa FM, Radio Flaixbac, Radio Marina, Euskatea Radio and others. "Umbrella" has proven to be one of the strongest international single releases in Spain of 2007 with How To Save A Life by The Fray or All Good Things (Come To An End) by Nelly Furtado.

In Romania, the song took the top position beaten Akon’s "Don't Matter". In the next week Akon returned to number one, only to be beaten again by "Umbrella" in the week after. The song has reached the top spot in RT100 three times, always against "Don't Matter".

According to Radio and Records it is currently the most-listened-to Urban song.[22]

Impact of weather

The song's reign at number one in the UK happened when the country was hit by extreme rainfall and flooding, which led some people to jokingly suggest the two events were related, calling it the "Rihanna Curse". Interestingly in Greece (the single's worst performing market) "Umbrella" was released at a time when people were suffering through a summer of several heatwaves topping 45C/113F and the worst forest fires of modern history, killing 60 people. The song only reached number fourteen in the Greek singles chart but gained high airplay on radios.
