Umbrella (Lied)
Vorlage:Cleanup Vorlage:Infobox Single
"Umbrella" is the first single released from Rihanna’s third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad. It features Def Jam CEO Jay-Z. The single topped the charts worldwide and has simultaneously topped the UK (where it topped the chart at number one for ten consecutive weeks, and was Rihanna's first number-one single),[1] Canadian, Irish, German, Slovakian, United States, Australian, New Zealand, Polish, Austrian, Belgian, Norwegian and Swiss charts, along with the United World Chart. It won Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.
Background and single release
According to the songwriters, the song was offered to many labels before being recorded by Rihanna. The song was originally offered to Britney Spears with the lyrics written especially for her, however she turned it down.[2] The song was then offered to Mary J. Blige; she also turned it down.[3]
The beat from Umbrella is a loop taken from Apple's Garageband, a musical production application.
In many parts of the U.S., the single was released on March 28, 2007,[4] although its official release date was March 29, 2007.[5] The song premiered on the New York radio station Hot 97 and on her official website on March 29 at 5:00pm EST.
It premiered on UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on the Scott Mills show. In the UK, the song was released digitally on May 14, 2007 with the physical CD release following on May 28 2007, one week before the album was released.[6][7]
Many major radio stations in Los Angeles, Boston and New York City have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap. On the issue dated April 28, 2007, the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one. It eventually went on to spend seven weeks at number one before falling to number two and is Rihanna’s fifth top ten Hot 100 single in under two years.
Remixes
Chris Brown wrote an answer song titled "Cinderella" with the same melody but different lyrics. It had been released to radio stations by June 12, 2007. In it his verse replaces Rihanna’s second verse, but they share the third verse and the final chorus. His chorus, however, differs from Rihanna's: instead of "You can stand under my umbrella", he sings "You can be my Cinderella". It is officially titled "Cinderella Under the Umbrella". The remix was largely ignored by Pop stations, where listeners preferred the original, but enjoyed more airplay than the original on Urban stations.
The Chris Brown and Lil' Mama versions have enjoyed the most airplay. These two popular remixes were leaked to urban radio stations and are sometimes played more than the original version.
Jody den Broeder, The Lindbergh Palace, Seamus Haji and Paul Emanuel provided dance mixes for the song. These remixes helped the song achieve the number one position on both Billboard's club and dance radio charts. Norwegian Recycling has also made a remix with more synths and housefeeling.
Cover versions
Indie singer-songwriter Scott Simons released a version of Umbrella on MySpace and his website which soon became an internet favorite and received radio play on several stations in the U.S. and overseas.[8]
Upcoming singer Mariè Digby released an acoustic version of the song through iTunes under Hollywood Records on August 3, 2007. The single was previously released on the Los Angeles based radio station STAR 98.7 as a 'You Oughta Hear' feature. Canadian ska punk band illScarlett and Terra Naomi, a singer who was discovered on YouTube, have also recorded acoustic versions.
Pop/Folk singer and actress Mandy Moore performed her own version of the song in a slower, more ballad-like arrangement. Moore stated that while she is not the biggest fan of pop music, "...you just can't deny how melodic this song is."[9] John West has also covered the song with acoustic guitars and a cello, providing a dramatic melodic version that is reminiscent in style to John Mayer.[10]
During a show on their Project Revolution tour, My Chemical Romance did a 1:05 cover of the chorus.[11] Ross Copperman, an American singer, performed a cover of the song, using only his voice and a piano, at the McFly concerts he supported across the UK in July/August 2007. Additionally, "Umbrella" has been covered by Biffy Clyro during an appearance on Radio One's Live Lounge.[12]
The Italian pop-punk band Vanilla Sky recorded Umbrella for an exclusive on their MySpace in September 2007, receiving over 30,000 plays in its first week online.[13]
Promotion
Rihanna made formal appearances all over the United Kingdom. She also performed three of her new songs in Preston at the BBC Radio 1 One Big Weekend event. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. In Germany she performed the song exclusively at Viva Live and the 42nd edition of the highly popular chart show The Dome. "Umbrella" was also performed live on Live Earth, GMTV, Loose Women, Blue Peter, Kiss Concert 2007, Sprint Concert, Zoopotia Show, Stripped Show, Canadian Idol, 106 & Park, The View and two unknown places. Before Rihanna performed Umbrella live on Live Earth, BBC Radio 1, Stripped Show, Zoopotia Show and the Kiss Concert 2007, the opening interpolated "Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer. She is to go on tour in December.
Music video
The music video was shot on April 13, 2007[14] and was directed by Chris Applebaum. It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at http://www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007. It remained at number one for eight weeks.
The video starts with Jay-Z rapping in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen apparently walking around en pointe. Later, Rihanna is seen nude and painted silver. In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain, where Jay-Z was rapping at the beginning of the video.
There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on April 30, 2007 on MTV is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On May 14, 2007, the "Umbrella" video premiered on BET’s 106 & Park at number nine and has peaked at number four as of May 30, 2007 , Rihanna’s first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "Pon de Replay", in 2005. In this version, she can also be seen walking en pointe and the added water effects can be seen. On May 1, 2007, "Umbrella" debuted on MTV’s Total Request Live at number ten, and by May 9 it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 15 days and has been on the countdown for 38 days, its no longer eligible for voting online due to "Shut Up and Drive".
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards nominees were announced at 2PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, and "Umbrella" was nominated for 5 awards, including Video of the Year, Monster Single of the Year and Female Artist of the Year.[15] The song won Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year.
The music video for "Umbrella" became the most played video ever on MTV Poland, beating Madonna’s "Hung Up".

In Latin America, the single debuted at number thirty-nine in the Latin America Top 40, and in its gaining points, it is currently peaking at #2,[19] the single has become Rihanna’s biggest hit in the region, her only top 10 single and has give her the honor of being the only Barbadian artist to reach the top 10. In Paraguay, the single has peak at #1[20] while in Ecuador the single has peak at #2[21], becoming Rihanna’s biggest hit in both countries. In Argentina, "Umbrella" became her only top-ten song and her breakthrough song as well.
