Cal
Cal Cruthclow (* 25. Oktober 1985 in Coventry) ist ein britischer Motorradrennfahrer.
Karriere
From a very young age I was fortunate enough to be taken all around England and the whole of Europe to watch my father Derek race. At first I was not interested at all in racing motorbikes up until the age of 11 when I spent 2 hours riding an old dirt bike and learnt how to ride a manual bike. I wanted to race as soon as possible and the first opportunity that came was the next weekend. My father purchased an Aprilia SP125 from JHPerformance (John Hackett).
I had decided that I wanted to race in the UK Junior Challenge. Every round of this championship was held at Darley Moore. My first race meeting was one week after buying my new bike. I managed to finish first in race one and second in race two During my first year of road racing things seemed to get better all season. I won the UK Junior Challenge championship by 98 points. My results for the season were 9 wins, 6 second places and 3 third place finishes. After successfully winning the UK Junior Challenge I set my targets high for my first season in the Aprilia 125 Challenge. The 125s were a support race at every British Superbike round which meant that I would be racing at all the circuits throughout Britain. I was a bit tense going into the season because I knew that I was up against some tough competition, and I was lacking in track time at these circuits. I was pleased with my performance at the first round as I finished 12th position. I then settled down to some good top five finishes at the following few rounds, and I began to feel confident running with Casey Stoner; Chaz Davies and Robert Butterworth who were usually the top three riders.
As the season came to a close I was still finishing within the top ten. Going into the last round at Donnington Park I was 6th in the championship and 4th in my age group. I managed to qualify 3rd on the grid in the wet weather, which had cleared up and was dry for the actual race. I was racing really well and every lap was a four-way battle for the lead. I was so determined to get the podium position I had wanted so badly. It all came down to the last lap I managed to overtake Robert Butterworth on the last corner to finish 3rd and get the podium position I had wanted so badly. This third place meant that I finished 5th overall in the championship and 3rd in my age group.
In 2001 I decided that I wanted to continue in the Aprilia Challenge and hopefully go on to win the championship. I managed to gain sponsorship from Hinckley Motorcycle and Scooter Centre, which is a local motorcycle dealer in the midlands. The owner Paul Ward kindly supplied me with the funds to purchase Chaz Davies' Aprilia RS125. This was the bike that Chaz had raced in the Aprilia Challenge in the year 2000. At the beginning of this season an academy for young riders in Britain was established and was named the ACU Road Race Academy. The academy manager Dave Luscombe along with a panel of racing representatives assessed a number of young riders in order to find the best 12 riders to be the first group of Academy students. After successfully completing all stages of the assessment, I was chosen for the ACU Road Race Academy. Being chosen gave me extra encouragement to win the championship and prove to sponsors, family, friends, and most of all myself that I could do it.
After gaining experience and a lot of track time at all of the circuits I hoped that I could win. I had to battle very hard with my main rival Paul Veazey and a mid season crash at Brands Hatch (Paddock Hill) nearly ruined my season. With a plastered broken elbow and a race at Cadwell Park the next weekend I was not very happy. I decided to cut my plaster off 3 days after the crash and hope that I could finish the race and get the points I desperately needed. I managed to finish 1st and 2nd at Cadwell with a very broken and sore elbow.
At Brands Hatch, the last round of the championship, I needed to beat Paul Veazey in the first race to win overall. The first race was hair raising. In an eight lap race I went into the first corner in 11th position. I overtook each rider one by one to go on and win on the last lap! This meant that I had won the first race and the championship! It was the best race I have ever had. The 2001 season was fantastic and I really enjoyed it. In total I had 17 podium finishes out of 22 races. 8 of the podium positions were wins, 6 second place, and 3 third place finishes.
In 2002 a newly established race team called Tech 2 took me on board and asked me to ride in the Junior Superstock championship on a Suzuki GSXR 600. My team mate Tom Sykes also rode with me in the Junior Superstocks. The other rider that rode for Tech 2 was David Jefferies. David rode in the Superstock Championship on a Suzuki GSXR 1000. Going into the season knowing that I was the youngest competitor I hoped to finish within the top ten, so it was fantastic for me to finish fourth overall. Riding with Tom Sykes and Craig Jones who were the top two riders in the championship really helped me to progress in my first season on a four-stroke motorbike. I was really pleased with my performance as this was my first season on a 600cc motorbike and most of the other competitors had already completed a full season on these bikes. This was a great move for my career and I really enjoy being part of the Tech 2 team.
For the 2003 season I had planned to ride with Tech2 again, moving into the British Supersport championship. Due to financial problems Tech2 were unable to provide me with a ride for 2003. They informed me only three weeks before the start of the season that they weren't able to run a team, which meant I struggled to find sponsorship at such a late stage. Therefore, I decided to enter the Virgin Mobile Yamaha R6 Cup. It is a one make series where all the bikes are identical. I had high expectation of myself entering the Yamaha R6 Cup and with such a big prize up for grabs. I was very eager, maybe too eager as I crashed out on three of the first six rounds. After overcoming my mistakes I racked up a tally of 4 race wins, 2 second place finishes and 3 third's. I also managed six pole position and six New lap records.
After a hard year trying to make up so many points, against riders like Tommy Hill and Kieran Clarke I finished a credible second in the championship and have now managed to secure a British Supersport deal for 2004 with Northpoint Ekerold Honda .

For 2007 he made his debut in the prestigious British Superbike Championship, with the Rizla Suzuki team alongside four-time runner-up Chris Walker. He took pole at Croft[1]. and finished 9th overall after finishing the season with his first podium, third at Brands Hatch. For 2008 he moves to HM Plant Honda, sponsored by CIA Insurance [2]. He took his first series win in race 2 at Thruxton [3][4]. He took pole for round 3 at Oulton Park - he lead race 1 before running wide in damp conditions[5], and crashed heavily out of 2nd place in race 2, injuring his ankle in the process [6]. After initially having the better of team-mate Leon Haslam, he was ultimately outpointed by him. He took two wins in the season, and finished 3rd overall in the championship, beating Tom Sykes by two points after the Yorkshireman had a late mechanical failure in the final round.
He previously won the British Supersport Championship in 2006, after a 3 year stint in the series in which he finished 3rd in 2005 [7]. He was runner-up in the 2003 Yamaha R6 Cup behind Tommy Hill, who earned a factory sponsored ride in the British Superbike series for this achievement.
On 23 September 2008, it was confirmed that Crutchlow had signed a deal to ride for the Yamaha factory team in the 2009 World Supersport Championship.[8]
