Continental Airlines Flight 3407 was a daily commuter flight from Newark, New Jersey, United States to Buffalo, New York, United States operated under the Continental Connection brand by regional airline Colgan Air. It crashed into a home on February 12, 2009 in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence Center.[1][2]

Crash

The crash occurred at 6050 Long Street at around 10:20 p.m. EST (02-13 03:20 UTC), according to the The Buffalo News.[3] Reports state that the total number of fatalities is 49, with all but one being passengers and crew on the plane; the additional fatality and two injuries were on the ground. A residence that the plane landed on was flattened completely, and crews also responded to a large fire that resulted.[2] The aircraft in question, a 74-seat Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 built in 2008, was on approach to land at the nearby Buffalo Niagara International Airport when it disappeared from RADAR.[3] [4]

According to recordings from the Air Traffic Control at Buffalo, there was no contact from the pilot of any mechanical failure.[5] The Buffalo News reported that crew members aboard the flight reported mechanical problems as they approached Buffalo.[3] Weather conditions were reported to be a wintry mix in the area[2], with light snow, fog, and 17 mph winds.[6]

Investigation

Continental Airlines Inc. said Colgan Air was "in the process of collecting information."[6] The National Transportation Safety Board announced that they would send a team to the crash site on February 13 to begin the investigation.[3]
