The Shanghai Tower (Vorlage:Zh-cp) is a supertall skyscraper approved for construction in the Pudong District of Shanghai. The building, which upon completion will rise to 632 meters, have 127 stories, and contain an area of 380,000 sq meters,[1][2][3] will be the tallest building in China,[4] and one of the tallest in the world.[5]
Design
Planning models for the Lujiazui financial district dating back to 1993 show plans for three supertall skyscrapers all next to each other.[6] Two have already been built; the Jin Mao Building was completed in 1998, and the Shanghai World Financial Center in 2008.
After numerous designs were submitted by many architectural firms, two design proposals reached the final in early 2008, both 580 m tall.[7] An innovative design by Gensler was chosen in June 2008,[8] where the building twists as it rises and is surrounded by an outer glass curtain wall.
The tower will feature nine indoor gardens at different levels, situated between the main building and the glass façade, with a height of more than 10 meters each. A public park will also be contained within the building.[4]
Construction status
As of November 2008, the site has been prepared for construction, and building is to start later this year.[9][10] The tower has passed an environmental impact study.[3] Construction of the tower will use sustainable techniques to make the building environmentally friendly and reduce energy usage.[4]
The current block assigned for the Shanghai Tower, Z3-2, was for a short time a driving range, before the site was cleared for preparation.[7]
The building was originally meant to be completed by 2010, in time for the 2010 World Expo,[7] but is now expected to be finished in 2013.[11]
