The Minsk Automobile Plant is one of the oldest and largest automotive plants in the CIS. Heavy trucks make up most of the plant's production. Besides, such other products as trailers, special vehicles and buses are also within the output range of the plant.
The Minsk Automobile Plant has been keeping its chronicle record since June 16, 1944, when the first partisan detachments (World War II) came there to restore the vehicle repair shops. It was followed by the Resolution by the State Committee of Defense, dated August 9, 1944, concerning the creation of an automotive assembly factory in Minsk. The country contributed everything possible to the building of the first Belarus automotive plant. So, as soon as in October, 1947, the first five MAZ trucks were assembled.
The first MAZ-205 vehicles, that left the Plant's gates at the end of 1947, were only heralds of birth of the Belarusian automotive industry. In order to provide the soonest possible coming and operating of Minsk vehicles to and at the construction sites of the country, the Plant was to be being built under tie rate dictated by the urgent time. The first stage of construction was completed as soon as the end of 1948, the second stage - in 1950. The result was that in the same 1948 it became possible to arrange serial production of vehicles and after construction was completed - to reach the design capacity and even to exceed it. In 1951 the Plant produced 25,000 vehicles as against 15,000 under the plan. This output growth was not the only improvement. As a result of research works of the Plant's engineers there appeared vehicles that were yet unknown for the world's automotive industry. So the world's first 40 ton tipper - MAZ-530 - was awarded with the highest 'Grand-Prix1 award at the World's Brussels Industrial Exhibition in October of 1958.
In November of 1958 there at the Minsk Automobile Plant happened the event that greatly determined the further development of the Plant: the first samples of MAZ-500 and MAZ-503 vehicles were assembled - aimed to substitute the first generation MAZ-200 vehicles. But the road to the new trucks was not easy. It required both time and efforts. Ahead, there were a lot of complex technical decisions, comprehensive engineering tests on the vehicles being created, reconstruction of production facilities. However, the Plant's people turned out capable to cope with the tasks. December 31, 1965, was the day when the last vehicle of the first MAZ products family- MAZ-205 tipper - left the main assembly line and was positioned onto the pedestal as a monument for the first MAZes. The Plant had completely switched to production of MAZ-500 family vehicles, increasing this production successfully, (n 1966 the banner of the Plant was decorated with the first award - Order of Lenin, in 1971 - with the Order of October Revolution.
The 70th were the years of accelerated renewal of the vehicles produced. As soon as in September of 1970 the production of the modernized MAZ-500A vehicles was begun, and in March of 1976 the main assembly line was left by the first MAZ-5549 tipper belonging to the new MAZ-5335 family. Created in the 70th on the basis of a four-axle full-drive wheel chassis, the trucks and truck tractors had become irreplaceable aid for explorers and developers of petroleum resources, geologists and constructors, who are engaged in development of those distant regions of Siberia and Middle Asia. In 1977 the Plant was awarded with its third great award - the second Order of Lenin.
The early 80th at the Plant were indicated with an important event. On May 19, 1981, the first MAZ-5432 truck tractor was assembled at the main line. The vehicle belonged to the new advanced MAZ-6422 family of vehicles and road trains. Less than two years after, on April 16, 1983, the 1000th vehicle of this family was assembled. Production of the new vehicles went on growing. On April 14, 1989, the 1,000,000th MAZ vehicle was produced. This happened to be the MAZ-64221 truck tractor. Preparatory works to launch the three-axle truck tractors into serial production were arranged at the Plant.
In 1996, after successfully passing acceptance and service tests in automotive organizations of Republic of Belarus a new MAZ-5440 model range was recommended for serial production. March 11, 1997, was the day, when the first highway truck tractor of the new MAZ-54421 left the assembly line of the Minsk Automobile Plant. At the end of 1997 there were assembled the MAZ-54402 and MAZ-544021 vehicles that are in full compliance with all the European requirements for heavy-duty vehicles for international transportations.
The Minsk Automobile Plant that has always played an important role in the development of the former USSR Republics' national economies, nowadays goes on meeting the demands of Republic of Belarus and other CIS countries for heavy-duty vehicles. The Minsk Automobile Plant also evokes interest and attention among its foreign partners. On December 10,1997, General Director of the 'BelavtoMAZ' Production Amalgamation, Valentin GURINOVITCH, Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG (Germany), Dr. Ing. Klaus Schubert and General Director of the 'Lada-OMC Holding’ Alexei VAGANOV, signed an agreement to create a 'MAZ-MAN’ Belarus-German Joint Venture for producing trucks, and signed the Articles of the Joint Venture. There were also signed the documents concerning the creation of a 'MAZ-MAN Trading’ Joint Venture for marketing and sales of the products manufactured. As compared with other projects on production of vehicles in the CIS countries this project is distinguished by the fact, that the share of the Belarus units and components within the vehicles, manufactured by the Joint Venture, will reach the of 60%. The "MAZ-MAN" project was an important move to make Belarussian trucks for international transportation be able to compete with the leading world's brands on the CIS markets.
