Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ist ein Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, für die bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Musiker, Produzenten und sonstigen Leute im Umfeld des Rock'n'Roll.
Seit 1986 werden jedes Jahr eine begrenzte Anzahl neuer Mitglieder in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Die Aufnahme kann frühestens 25 Jahre nach Erscheinen der ersten Schallplatte oder CD erfolgen.
Die neue Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wurde am 2. September 1995 eröffnet.
Der namhafte Architekten I.M. Pie entwarf das Gebäude für das Museum. "Die Konzeption dieses Gebäudes soll die Energie des Rock´n Roll widerspiegeln", so beschrieb der Schöpfer selbst die Idee beim Beginn der Arbeiten. Das Gebäude stellt nun das Herzstück von Clevelands North Coast Harbor dar und umfaßt fast 14.000 qm² und kostetete USD 84 Millionen.
Das Gebäude wurde inzwischen zweifach für seine gelungende Architektur ausgezeichnet (1997 American Institute of Architects / American Institute of Steel Construction: Award for Innovative Design and Excellence in Architecture Using Structural Steel; 1998 New York Association of Consulting Engineers: Engineering Excellence Award ).
Warum hat man sich für den Standort Cleveland entschieden ? Der aus Cleveland stammende Discjockey Alan Freed hat den Ausdruck "Rock´n Roll" im Jahre 1951 geprägt. Die von ihm moderierte nächtliche Radiosendung "The Moondog Rock & Roll House Partys" befaßte sich ausschließlich mit "Rock´n Roll".
