The House of the Rising Sun
The House of the Rising Sun ist eine bekannte US-amerikanische Folk-Ballade.
Herkunft
Die Herkunft des Lieds ist nicht mehr mit Sicherheit zu ermitteln. Der Folklorist Alan Lomax, Autor des Liederbuchs "Our Singing Country" von 1941 schrieb, dass die Melodie von einer traditionellen englischen Ballade stamme und der Text von Georgia Turner und Bert Martin aus Kentucky geschrieben worden sei, was allgemein als die stimmigste Angabe angesehen wird.
Die älteste bekannte Aufnahme stammt von Clarence Ashley und Gwen Foster und wurde 1934 veröffentlicht. Ashley meinte sich zu erinnern, das Lied bereits von seinem Großvater Enoch Ashley gelernt zu haben.

Das "Haus der aufgehenden Sonne"
"House of the Rising Sun" ist ein gebräuchlicher Euphemismus für "Bordell", ob dies allerdings auch die im Lied gemeinte Bedeutung ist, ist unbekannt. Gemeint könnte auch ein anderer oder fiktiver Ort sein. Neben verschiedenen Häusern in New Orleans, die als "House of the Rising Sun" ins Spiel gebracht werden, und von denen keines mehr steht, wird es auch als Metapher verstanden und mit Sklaverei in Verbindung gebracht. Auch das alte New Orleans Prison for Women soll über seinem Eingang eine Verzierung in der Form einer aufgehenden Sonne gehabt haben, weshalb auch darüber spekuliert wird, ob dies das gemeinte House of the Rising Sun ist.
Erzählperspektive
Das Geschlecht des fiktiven Erzählers ist nicht festgelegt. Während das Lied früher als aus der Perspektive einer Frau erzählt interpretiert wurde, womit die Geschichte über eine Frau handeln könnte, die einem Trinker oder Spieler nach New Orleans folgt und dort im House of the Rising Sun Prostituierte oder Gefängnisinsasse wird, interpretierten es The Animals als aus der Perspektive eines Mannes erzählt und warnten in ihrem Lied vor Trinkerei und Spielerei.
