• Die folgende Darstellung ist sehr ausführlich und betrifft 'nur' New York , aber sie enthält interessante Informationen darüber, wie man früher zum Lehranalytiker erkoren wurde.

Das hier dürfte wohl der allgemeinere Hintergrund der ganzen Prozedur gewesen sein:

[256 Freud was seized by Ernest Jones' idea of a 'secret council composed of the best and most trustworthy among our men to take care of the further development of psychoanalysis and defend the cause against personalities and accidents when I am no more' Freud-Jones, cited by E. A major problem with this approach is epitomised in a letter Karl Abraham wrote to Freud discussing the works of Ferenczi and Rank: 'I promise you, dear Professor, in advance, that it will be done on my part in a non-polemic and purely factual manner and only with the wish to serve you and your work, which is identical with your person' (K. Abraham in Freud, S. & Abraham in H. Abraham & E. Freud, eds., A psychoanalytic dialogue: the Letters of Sigmund Freud and Karl Abraham (1907-1926), Basic Books, New York, 1963, p. 351 [emphasis added]; see also F. Roustang, Dire mastery: discipleship from Freud to Lacan, trans. N. Lukacher, Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 1982). The desire to serve is accompanied by a promise in advance which will prevent subsequent changes of opinion and critical questioning. What happens to psychoanalysis when the leader is the ultimate theoretical referent, the paradigm of all analysts, the settler of disputes within the society? If one is ready to submit 'in advance' to the leader's judgements, this maintains the transference and faith and provides a vehicle for transmission.
