Strata, under construction

Strata (also known as Castle House) is a 147-metre, 43-storey, 408-unit apartment tower under construction at Elephant and Castle in Southwark, London. It was designed by Hamilton's Architects. It is located on the site of a 6-storey building. The tower was first proposed in 2005, construction started in 2007 and completion is expected for 2010.

The three 9-metre wind turbines at the top of the building generate sufficient energy to either provide lighting for the whole building or provide electricity to 20 apartments. Featured on-site is a combined heat and power system to provide sustainable power generation: rainwater is harvested for re-use. The energy costs per flat are envisaged to be up to 40% less than Britain's typical housing average. The building exceeds the current UK regulations relating to sustainability by 13% whilst overall carbon emissions are expected to be 15% lower than the Mayor of London's good practice benchmark.

The building was 'topped out' in June 2009[1].
