Rumana Morshed Kanak Chapa (Vorlage:Nee; born 11 September 1969)[1] is a Bangladeshi singer.[2][3] She received the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer three times, for her performance in the films Love Story (1995), Premer Taj Mahal (2001) and Ek Takar Bou (2008).[4][5] She published her autobiography Sthobir Jajabor in 2011 and a poetry book Mukhomukhi Joddha in 2012.[6]
Early life and career
Kanak Chapa was born as Rumana Morshed on 11 September 1969 in Dhaka in the then East Pakistan to Azizul Huque Morshed and Momena Jahan.[1] She is the third among five siblings. She got her first music lessons from her father.[1] During her career, she sang almost 30 thousand songs and released over 30 solo albums.[4] In 1978 she performed in television for the first time. As a child singer she became champion in Notun Kuri in the year 1978.[7] She received championship award for Jatiyo Shishu Protijogita for three years in a row. She was under the guidance of legendary artist Ustad Basir Ahmed for 12 years. During the time she learned all sorts of music such as- Classical, Nazrul etc.
Education
From a very little age, Kanakchapa’s father gave her the initial training in singing. Mr. Morshed was an amateur singer and also a painter who was the student of Shilpacharya Zainal Abedin’s 2nd batch.[8] Kanakchapa was born a conservative family. So her singing was not welcomed eventually. Her mother Momena Jahan. But her father stood with her. He wanted her daughter as he realized young Kanakchapa’s love for music. Kanak chapa completed her school from Madartek Abdul Aziz High School.[9] Later she went to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College for her HSC.[10]
Personal life
Kanak Chapa is married to music detector and composer Mainul Islam Khan since 1984.[11]
Career
She sang more than 3500 songs, did playback in about 2000 films.[12] About 40 albums of her had been released and till now they are very popular. She had performed in more than 4000 stage shows. She had shared the stage with the likes of Subir Nandi, Andrew Kishore, Kumar Bishwajit, Munir Khan and other artists of Bangladesh. Some notable albums of Kanak Chapa are Biroher Shorolipi, Talpatar Bashi, and folk album Kokila.

Social Activity
She is also involved with social organizations named Potho Shishuder Chayatol, Amra Khati Gorib and Matrisodon (old home). She has been running an online school named Amader Khelaghor School for about eight years.[13] With the experience she gained from this school she wrote the book named Shei Pothe Jaoa. Apon Nibash is an old home situated in Moinartek, Dhaka. The home is a shelter for old women who were disbanded and separated from their families. The women used to live by begging before coming to this home. It houses about forty old and poor women. Kanak Chapa is also involved with this old-home along with her husband. They contribute, and raise funds.
