Eine Kathedrale, genauer "Kathedralkirche" (v. lat.: ecclesia cathedralis) ist die Kirche eines Bischofsitzes. Oft verbindet man mit der Bezeichnung die Vorstellung eines großen eindrucksvollen Kirchengebäudes.
Die Verwendung der Bezeichnung ecclesia cathedralis begegnet erstmalig auf dem Konzil zu Tarragona 516. Eine andere Bezeichnung für die Kathedrale ist Mutterkirche (i.e. für eine Diözese). Als eine bedeutsame Kirche nannte man sie auch ecclesia major ("Große Kirche"). Als Hauptgotteshaus eines Bezirkes hieß die Kathedrale schließlich Domus Dei, woraus sich der deutsche Name Dom und das italienische Duomo ableiten.
Die Säulen der Erde von Ken Follet ist ein Roman der vom Bau einer Kathedrale handelt. Er spielt im England von 1123 bis 1173.
