Glennon Doyle Melton (born Glennon Doyle on March 20, 1976) is the author of Love Warrior (Flatiron, 2016),[1] a #1 New York Times bestselling memoir[2] and Oprah Book Club Pick.[3] She is also the author of the New York Times Bestselling memoir, Carry On, Warrior (Scribner, 2012); as well as an activist and a philanthropist. She is the creator of the online community Momastery,[4] and founder and president of Together Rising,[5] a non-profit that has raised more than four million dollars for women and children in crisis. Her writing has been featured in Reader's Digest,[6] Woman's Day,[7] and Family Circle,[8] and she has appeared on The Today Show,[9] The Meredith Vieira Show [10] and the #OWNSHOW.[11]

Early life and education

Glennon Doyle Melton was born in Burke, Virginia and comes from a close family that includes one sister, Amanda Doyle. She writes and speaks frequently about early struggles with bulimia and addiction. In her 2013 TEDx talk, Lessons from the Mental Hospital,[12] she discusses time spent in a mental hospital when she was a teen. She completed her Bachelor of Arts at James Madison University in 1998 and became a teacher in Northern Virginia. During her time at James Madison University, she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority.[13]

Career

Melton began her online writing career in 2009, with the creation of her blog, Momastery. The funny, conversational and tell-all nature of her writing quickly gained popularity. Viral blog posts[14] beginning with "2011 Lesson #2: Don't Carpe Diem"[15] led to the publication of her memoir, Carry On, Warrior and the growth of her social media audience. In 2013, Carry On, Warrior received the Books for a Better Life Best Relationship Award [16][17] and was a finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards for "Best Memoir & Autobiography"[18] In 2014, Parents Magazine named Melton and Momastery the winner of its award for Best All-Around at Social Media.[19] Melton has also become a professional public speaker.[20]

In her own words, Melton describes her career and life philosophy like this:

"Life is brutal. But it's also beautiful. Brutiful, I call it. Life's brutal and beautiful are woven together so tightly that they can't be separated. Reject the brutal, reject the beauty. So now I embrace both, and I live well and hard and real. My job is to wake up every day, say yes to life's invitation, and let millions of women watch me get up off the floor, walk, stumble, and get back up again."

In September 2016, Melton's book Love Warrior was selected to be a part of Oprah's Book Club 2.0.[21]

Personal life

Melton was married to former model Craig Melton from 2002–2016. They have children son Chase; and daughters Tish and Amma. Melton moved from Centreville, Virginia to Naples, Florida.[22]

On August 1, 2016, it was announced that Melton and her husband had separated.[23]

In November 2016, Melton announced that she was in a relationship with Abby Wambach.[24] In February 2017, they announced their engagement,[25] and married on May 14, 2017.[26]
