English singer-songwriter Adele is expected to release her fourth studio album in November 2021,[1] a follow-up to 25 (2015).[2] Rumoured to be titled 30, alluding to the age the singer divorced at,[3][4] the album will feature themes of separation, divorce, motherhood, and the anxiety of fame. It's reported to come out on CD and vinyl, as well as on streaming services.[2]

Background

Adele was reportedly working on her fourth studio album by 2018.[5] On 5 May 2019, her 31st birthday, Adele posted several black-and-white pictures of herself on her Instagram account celebrating the occasion, along with a message reflecting on the preceding year. The message ended with, "30 will be a drum n bass record to spite you". Media outlets took the post as an indication that a new album was on the way.[6][7] On 15 February 2020, Adele announced at a friend's wedding that her fourth studio album would be out by September 2020.[8] She later confirmed that the album's production and release had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9] However, on 24 October 2020, she made her first television appearance in almost four years, by hosting the episode of Saturday Night Live.[10]

Production

The album contains collaborations with the Swedish producers and songwriters Max Martin and Shellback (both co-writers of the 25 single "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)"), the Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson, the Canadian singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr., the Little Simz producer Inflo, as well as rappers Tyler, the Creator, and Skepta. Similarly to Adele's previous albums, vocal tracks on the new one are original demos.[2][4]

Release and promotion

On 1 October 2021, multiple projections and billboards of the number "30" started appearing around the world on major monuments like Buckingham Palace, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the Colisseum and the Louvre fueling rampant speculation that Adele was responsible, and that 30 would be the title of her fourth album.[3] On 4 October 2021, Adele changed all her social media profile images to a navy blue photo and also updated her website to match with a brand new logo.[11] The following day, Adele announced the lead single "Easy on Me" to be released on 15 October 2021.[12]

In October 2021, Adele became the first person to simultaneously appear the same month on covers of American[2] and British[13] editions of Vogue, both of which featured separate photoshoots for the magazines, and interviews on the new album.[1]
