Hazbin Hotel is an American adult animated black comedy web series created, directed, and produced by Vivienne "Vivziepop" Medrano.[1] The official pilot was released on YouTube on October 28, 2019.[1] On November 6, 2019, Medrano stated on Patreon that there was no slated release date for a first episode.[2]
The series' protagonist, Charlie, is the princess of Hell with the goal of rehabilitating sinners in the titular 'Hazbin Hotel,' as a peaceful alternative of reducing the population other than genocide.[1]
Premise
The series follows the misadventures of Charlie (Jill Harris), the princess of Hell and heir to the throne as she sets about fulfilling her dream of opening up a hotel called the "Happy Hotel" which aims to rehabilitate sinners. Due to overpopulation, the citizens go through an annual "cleanse", arranged by angels. Her main goal is hoping that her clients will be "checking out“ peacefully into Heaven. With the help of her devoted manager and partner Vaggie (Monica Franco) and their first sponsor, pornographic film actor Angel Dust (Michael Kovach), she's determined to make her dream become a reality. But when her proposal on live television goes sour, her plan attracts the attention of the powerful "radio demon" Alastor (Edward Bosco) who, despite finding her belief in redemption laughable, wants to help Charlie run the hotel for his own amusement.[3][4][5]
Characters
Main Characters
- Vorlage:Vanchor (voiced by Jill Harris; singing voice by Elsie Lovelock) is one of the main protagonists and founder of Hazbin Hotel (originally named Happy Hotel). She is the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith and is one of the few demons born in Hell.
- Vorlage:Vanchor (voiced by Monica Franco) is a anthropomorphic female moth demon, Charlie's girlfriend, and Chief Manager at Hazbin Hotel. She is highly protective of her girlfriend, and has a quick temper.
- Vorlage:Vanchor (voiced by Michael Kovach) is an anthropomorphic androgynous male spider demon and well known for his adult-filming career. He is the first volunteer for Charlie's rehabilitation program, but seems to only be interested in the free rent.
- Vorlage:Vanchor, also known as the "Radio Demon" (voiced by Edward Bosco; singing voice by Gabriel C. Brown), is an anthropomorphic deer demon, and one of the Overlords of Hell. He offers his services to Charlie in order to help her maintain her goal of running the hotel, but only for the amusement of watching it backfire. He nevertheless, provides a staff, and protects Charlie's business from outside threats.
- Niffty (voiced by Michelle Marie) is a small demonic cyclops from the 1950s, who's obsessed with cleanliness. She is summoned by Alastor to serve as the hotel housekeeper
- Husk (voiced by Mick Lauer), an ill-tempered and alcoholic 70s-era cat demon. He is summoned by Alastor to serve as the receptionist and bartender at the hotel.
Supporting Characters
- Sir Pentious (voiced by Will Stamper), an English anthropomorphic cobra from the Victorian era. His goal is to take over Hell, but he often fails miserably to more powerful demons.
- Cherri Bomb (voiced by Krystal LaPorte), a one-eyed demon punk from the 80s. She has a long-standing feud between her and Sir Pentious over claiming territories of the Pentagram City.
- Katie Killjoy (voiced by Faye Mata), the anchor of 666 News. An extremely cruel and narcissistic demon who bullies her co-anchor Tom Trench.
- Tom Trench (voiced by Joshua Tomar), 666 News' co-anchor, along with Katie Killjoy.
- The Egg Bois (voiced by Joe Gran), Sir Pentious's loyal minions who are labeled by numbers.
- Travis (voiced by Don Darryl Rivera), a demon who had sex with Angel Dust in the pilot.
- Exterminators, the Exterminators are tall, slim angels from Heaven who are sent to purge Hell for its overpopulation problem every year. Wielding the only weapons that can kill the demons of Hell, they remain a great threat to even the Overlords.
- Rosie - Rosie is one of the Overlords of Hell and an old friend of Alastor. She is also one of the villains in the series.
- Vox- Also known as the "TV Demon", Vox is a rival to Alastor, a powerful Overlord of Hell, and one of the major villains in the series. He runs all of the major television studios in Hell.
- Valentino- Valentino is one of the Overlords of Hell, the owner of the Porn Studios, and Angel Dust's boss. He's close friends to Vox and Velvet.
- Velvet- Velvet is one of the Overlords of Hell and a friend of Vox and Valentino. She appears alongside Vox and Valentino hiding in the later's adult studios during the cleanse.
- Helsa Von Eldritch- Helsa is a rival of Charlie, and a member of the Von Eldritch family, a rich and powerful Overlord family based on the creatures of H. P. Lovecraft. Portraits in the hotel reveal them to have close association with Lucifer and Lilith.
- Baxter- An aquatic demon scientist from the 1910s, who later associates with the Hotel.
- Crymini- A teenage delinquent dog demon from the 90s, who later associates with the Hotel.
- Mimzy- A showgirl and club owner who's close friends with Niffty and Alastor.
- Fat Nuggets- Angel Dust's pet pig.
- Molly- Molly is Angel Dust's twin sister.
- Henroin-The Father of Angel Dust and a mafia leader.
- Arackniss- The Older brother of Angel Dust and Molly.
- Razzle and Dazzle: Two goat demon servants created by Lucifer to protect Charlie.
- Villa- An anthropomorphic dog demon.
- Roo- a mysterious female Eldritch demon.
Guest Characters
- Lucifer and Lilith: Charlie's parents are only mentioned and displayed in a family portrait. Like Charlie, their appearance isn't fearsome and could almost pass as "human". Visual nods to their character designs are present; such as Lucifer's staff being a clear reference to his tempting of Eve. Vivienne has described Lucifer as a Willy Wonka-like character, and if he and Alastor met, they would be good friends due to their matching personalities. Lilith is shown in portraits and posters to be a famous stage performer, explaining Charlie's love of music and dance. She also appears to be the more understanding of Charlie's goals while Lucifer doesn’t believe Charlie’s plan would work.

Helluva Boss
Helluva Boss is a standalone series set in the same universe as Hazbin Hotel but with a different voice cast and story, co-written and starring YouTuber Brandon Rogers. It focuses around the enthusiastic imp Blitzo (voiced by Rogers) and his subordinate employees — Moxxie, Millie (Moxxie's wife), and Loona — running an assassination agency.[7] Moxxie is voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz, while both Millie and Loona are voiced by Erica Lindbeck.[8] Blitzo also got the book to make a portal to the living world from Stolas (voiced by Brock Baker), one of the Overlords of Hell, and the group later kills Eddie (voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz), a bratty kid who was their target.
Reception
Hazbin Hotel has been generally well received by critics and audiencesVorlage:Citation needed for its animation quality, however, not everybody takes well to the series' incessant crude humor and violence.[9] WhatCuture.com praised the animation quality in Hazbin Hotel, noting that it "doesn't just mark the debut of a fun, funny, stylish new (and mature) animated feature — it also shows the high-quality work even a small team of animators can create without need for the executive interference of a bigger company getting in the way of independent creative freedom.”[1] Stephen Novak from The Oswegonian student newspaper praised the animation, writing, and characters in Hazbin Hotel, but criticized the songs, saying "While "Hazbin Hotel" will certainly not appeal to everyone, those who can appreciate good animation and fun characters will certainly find themselves tortured by what is likely to be a long wait until the next episode."[9]
