At least 16 people were killed, and dozens more were injured. The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office released a photo of a person of interest, while a manhunt is ongoing.
Shootings
At approximately 7:15 p.m. EDT, police, fire, and rescue personnel arrived at Sparetime Recreation, a family restaurant and bowling alley, after a report of an active shooter.[1] Shortly after, a second shooting was reported at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, Vorlage:Convert from Sparetime.[2] Gunshots were reported at a Walmart distribution center in the area, but a shooting did not occur there, according to the company.[3][4]
The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police alerted residents of an active shooter at approximately 8:00 p.m.[5] The sheriff's office released images of the shooter using a "high-powered assault-style rifle".[6]
The Central Maine Medical Center began coordinating with local area hospitals to take in victims.[7] Several victims were taken to Maine Medical Center, the state's largest medical center; the hospital is on lockdown.[8][9]
Victims
It was originally reported that at least 22 people were killed, and 50–60 people were injured,[10][11] although some sources later reported that the death toll was between 15 and 20 and that 50 people were injured.[12] Not all of the injured were shot; some were injured due to stampeding.[12]
The Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston stated that it was coordinating with area hospitals to receive patients in response to a "mass casualty, mass shooter event".[13]
Aftermath
A shelter-in-place order was implemented in Lewiston, and schools were placed on lockdown.[14] Auburn issued its own shelter-in-place order and an additional order for businesses to lock down.[15] Classes at Central Maine Community College and schools in the Lewiston Public Schools district will be canceled on October 26 in response to the shooting.[16][17]
Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)[18] are providing assistance to local authorities.[19]
The Maine State Police will have a press conference on October 26 at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).[20][21]
Person of interest
A person of interest was identified by the police but not labeled a suspect.[22][23][24][25] According to the Sheriff's Office, the person of interest remains at large and is "armed and dangerous".[26] Pictures of the person of interest, a white male, and a white 2013 Subaru Outback connected to the shootings[27] were released by the Sheriff's Office in an effort to identify the person.[28] According to a state police bulletin, the person of interest is a firearms instructor trained by the military and was committed for two weeks to a mental health facility in summer 2023.[29] The vehicle that was being sought was located in Lisbon, Maine.[30][31]
Reactions
Mayor Carl Sheline said that he was "heartbroken" for Lewiston.[32] Senator Angus King wrote on Twitter that he was "deeply sad".[33] Lewiston City Councilor Robert McCarthy, whose home is located less than a mile from the location of one of the shootings, recalled the incident as "a real scary event".[34] Maine's U.S. representatives, Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree, both released statements expressing shock at the events.[35] Governor Janet Mills was briefed on the shootings and urged residents to follow law enforcement instructions.[36] The mayor of Auburn, Maine, said that "we will get this situation settled."[37]
Federal
President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting while hosting a state dinner at the White House for the Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese.[38] He stepped away from the dinner to meet with his advisors[39] and called several Maine lawmakers to offer full federal support.[40] On October 26th, Biden ordered in a proclamation for flags to be lowered to Half-mast as “a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine”.[41]
Organizations
The Boston Celtics reacted to the shooting by offering their thoughts on Twitter alongside an image of Jayson Tatum dribbling a basketball and the score of a game; the team was heavily criticized for this post, and it was deleted. They then made the Tweet again, this time without an image or graphic.[42]
