Guts is the upcoming second studio album by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo. It is set to be released on September 8, 2023, through Geffen Records. The album will be preceded by the lead single "Vampire" on June 30, 2023.

Background

On May 21, 2021, Olivia Rodrigo released her debut studio album Sour to massive commercial success. Produced by Dan Nigro, the album went on to become the most-streamed album of 2021 and earned Rodrigo three Grammys. The singer-songwriter embarked on the Sour Tour which consisted of 48 shows across North America and Europe in spring 2022.[1]

Early plans in August 2021 revealed that her upcoming record would "probably [be] a lot happier" than her debut.[2] Talking to Billboard in February 2022, Rodrigo confirmed that she and Nigro had been working on a new album and had a title and "a few songs" ready.[3] [4] In an interview with People in March, Rodrigo explained that she "felt definitely differently about love" when she wrote Sour than she did at the time of the interview. She was ready to move on and close the chapter that was Sour.[5] She also told Rolling Stone that she was "trying to get as much done as possible" for her sophomore album before embarking on the Sour Tour in April.[6] In late 2022, while revealing her Spotify Wrapped, she confirmed that new music was underway.[7] She first gave a taste of new music on January 8, 2023, the two-year anniversary of her debut single "Drivers License". The clip posted on her Instagram would show Rodrigo and Nigro "rocking out" to a "mystery piano track".[8] As her debut album Sour turned two on May 21, 2023, the singer-songwriter ensured fans that music was very close to being released.[9] She also highlighted "OR2", an acronym for Olivia Rodrigo 2 (her second studio album), in her fan newsletter.[10]

In early June 2023, Rodrigo's website was updated with a countdown that is set to end on June 30.[11] She had previously posted a cryptic mirror picture of her with a calendar in the background highlighting the aforementioned date, in late May.[12] Simultaneously, the Spotify canvas that displays when listening to "Drivers License" marked an expiration date of June 30.[13] On June 13, Rodrigo officially announced the upcoming lead single "Vampire", slated for release on June 30 and revealed the single cover.[14] On June 20, she revealed another Easter egg by leaving her fans a voicemail greeting, which turned out to be the first preview of "Vampire", and played a piano-driven instrumental. She had previously set up a phone number in 2021 titled the Sour Heartbreak Hotline.[15]

On June 26, 2023, the online store of her website revealed the official album title, Guts, and release date by putting up several limited editions of the album.[16] Following this, Rodrigo posted the artwork on social media.[17] In a statement, Rodrigo shared that the album is about "growing pains" and figuring out who she is at this point in her life. She felt like she grew "10 years" between the ages of 18 and 20, a process she describes as a natural part of "growth", which she hopes to reflect with the record.[18]
