Presidential elections will be held in the Maldives in 23 September 2018. The first round is scheduled to be held in September, with a second round held within 21 days if required.[1]
Electoral system
The President of the Maldives is elected using the two-round system; if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the first round, a second round will be held.[2]
Candidates
Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen will run for re-election.[3] In February 2018 former President Mohamed Nasheed announced that he intended to contest the elections as the Maldivian Democratic Party candidate.[4] However, in June 2018 the party selected Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as its candidate after Nasheed withdrew his candidacy.[3]
