Nguyễn Thanh Tùng (born July 5, 1994), known professionally as Sơn Tùng M-TP (Vorlage:IPA-vi), is a Vietnamese singer-songwriter and actor. Born and raised in Thái Bình, Thái Bình Province, Tùng's family discovered his singing ability when he was two. He later joined the city's Children's Arts & Culture Palace at eight, and wrote and performed music while joining several independent groups during his teen. The solo singles he respectively released in 2012 and 2013, "Cơn mưa ngang qua" and "Em của ngày hôm qua", received breakthrough success and launched his career. However, the instrumental tracks of both songs and his other releases were later admitted by Tùng to having been plagiarized. His latter singles, "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" and "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau", gained further controversies when they were also being accused of plagiarism. In 2017, he experienced a more-favorable public reception with the success of two songs, "Lạc trôi" and "Nơi này có anh".

Tùng also released the compilation album m-tp M-TP and the autobiography Chạm tới giấc mơ in 2017, and conducted the M-TP Ambition - Chuyến bay đầu tiên concert tour (2015–2016). His other work include a starring role in the 2014 film Dandelion and an appearance as contestant on the television series The Remix. The former role earned him a Golden Kite Prize for Young Prominent Actor. Tùng has also received numerous awards, including a Dedication Music Award, seven Green Wave Awards, a MTV Europe Music Award, a Mnet Asian Music Award, eleven WeChoice Awards, three Zing Music Awards and an inclusion in Forbes Vietnam's 2018 edition of 30 Under 30 list. The singer had spent four years being parts of Văn Production and WePro Entertainment, until the establishment of his record label M-TP Entertainment in late 2016.

Life and career

1994–2012: Early life and career beginnings

The Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City, where Tùng attended from 2012 to 2014

Nguyễn Thanh Tùng was born on July 5, 1994, in Thái Bình, Thái Bình Province to his father, Nguyễn Đức Thiện, and his mother, Phạm Thị Thanh Bình.[1][2] Bình was a traditional dancer of the city's official performing group and a performer at Thái Bình's chèo theatre.[3][2] She first met Thiện when he was working as a transport driver.[3] After being pregnant with Tùng, Bình opened a barbershop at home, but later switched it into a clothing store.[3][2] She also used to work as a bridal make-up artist.[4] The singer described early life with his family as "peaceful."[5] He also has a younger brother, Nguyễn Việt Hoàng (Vorlage:Abbr 2000).[2][6]

Tùng was two when the family discovered his singing ability.[2] At the age of eight, he joined Thái Bình's Children's Arts & Culture Palace and learned to play electronic keyboard.[2] Tùng's mother indeed can play guitar while her husband played up to seven different instruments.[2] However, the two had always been disapproving of their son's pursue of a singing career and wanted him focus on education instead.[2][7] His father specifically wanted him to study business in college.[7] Despite this, Tùng frequently participated in singing shows and competitions at his schools.[8] He had attended Kỳ Bá Junior High School, Tây Sơn Junior High School and Lê Quý Đôn High School.[8]

In 2009, Tùng and his classmates formed a group called Over Band as they started to write and upload songs onto independent music website LadyKillah.[4][7] One of the site's members, rap artist Hoàng Kê, later invited the singer to join his hip hop group Young Pilots in 2010. Young Pilots recorded music and performed on various stages across Thái Bình, granting early success in their hometown and online.[7] During this time, Tùng has also adapted his stage name M-TP, which stands for "music," "tài năng" ("talent") and "phong cách" ("stylish").[3] It was given by his fellow LadyKillah's member, Mr. J.[3][9]

"Cơn mưa ngang qua" was originally a song that Tùng wrote for Over Band and Young Pilots before he ultimately decided to record it as his own solo track.[3][7] He published the song onto music website Zing MP3 in August 2011, and within two months of release, it gained 1.7 million streams.[10] The success of "Cơn mưa ngang qua" exceeded the singer's initial expectation.[10] It later gave him the Song of the Month award from music chart television program Favorite Song in October 2012, and a Zing Music Award for R&B Song of the Year.[11][12] Two newly-written versions of the track were released in February 2012.[13]

Also in 2012, the singer gained admission to the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City after achieving one of the highest entry scores.[1] He withdrew in June 2014, while shooting for the film Dandelion, due to scheduling conflicts and to focus on his future career.[14][15][16] In July 2012, he auditioned for Vietnam IdolVorlage:'s forth season but failed to make it past the first preliminary round.[17] He later signed an exclusive five-year deal with Văn Production in November 2012 and changed his stage name from M-TP to Sơn Tùng M-TP, following a suggestion came from the company's music director, Huy Tuấn, and musician Hà Quang Minh.[18][19][20]

Tùng released three singles from August to December 2013: "Nắng ấm xa dần"[21], "Đừng về trễ"[22] and "Em của ngày hôm qua".[23] The latter track, "Em của ngày hôm qua", enjoyed big streaming success when it gained over 100 million streams after three months on Zing MP3.[24] It helped the performer receive much media attention and was seen as his official launch to a career as a mainstream artist.[25][26] Favorite Song later awarded it the Song of the Month title of February 2014.[11] However, "Em của ngày hôm qua", "Cơn mưa ngang qua" and other tracks of his were accused of plagiarism.[27] When asked about the allegations back in 2012, the singer claimed they were "completely false."[28] In 2014, he eventually admitted to taking random instrumentals online to compose lyrics and being "inspired" by these instrumentals to create his own, but denied being influenced by their vocalic melodies.[29] In June 2014, Tuấn and Favorite SongVorlage:'s producers agreed to remove the singer's songs from the program.[30] Green Wave Awards also removed "Em của ngày hôm qua" from that year's nominations list.[31]

Before the controversies, Tùng penned "Gió cuốn em đi", a song which singer Quốc Thiên performed and released in April 2014.[32] In that May, Tùng contributed vocal to a charity cover of Tạ Quang Thắng's "Sống như những đóa hoa", and had to canceled many gigs to surgically remove a tumor on his leg.[33][34] In June 2014, it was announced that the singer would star as the lead role in Dandelion, a semi-biopic based on the life story of late singer Wanbi Tuấn Anh.[35] Quang Huy, who is the founder and chief executive officer at WePro Entertainment, directed the film.[36][35] Its soundtrack produced two successful singles performed by Tùng, "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" and "Không phải dạng vừa đâu".[37]

Once again, the production of "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" received numerous comparisons to the instrumental track of Jung Yong-hwa's song "Because I Miss You". Jung's record label, FNC Entertainment, considered the similarities between the two songs but found no copyright infringements. Despite this, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam still concluded that Tùng's song did get "influenced" by Jung's production. The organization temporally banned the track with its parent movie until a new mix was produced.[38] Dandelion was later released on December 31, 2014.[39] Also drawing criticisms was the music video for "Không phải dạng vừa đâu". It featured look-alikes of Phó Đức Phương and Dương Khắc Linh, both musicians whom have previously, negatively commented on Tùng's copyright controversies. Many publications deemed Tùng's video "disrespectful" toward the senior musicians. As a result, WePro issued an apology, stating the idea came from the video's director and was meant to represent the generation gap in music.[40] The company withdrew the video and planned to film another one, however, it was re-uploaded shortly after.[40][41]

Dandelion finally grossed VND 60 billion (US$2.8 million) at the box office, against its VND 10 billion budget.[37][42] Tùng's performance earned him a Golden Kite Prize for Young Prominent Actor, while "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" received a WeChoice Award for Song of the Year.[43][44] In November 2014, Văn Production banned Tùng from any activity (performing, filming, etc) in six months after the singer had violated his contract on many occasions, such as him not following the company's schedules and cancelling gigs without permission.[45] Tùng later terminated the contract, accusing the company of exploitation and not fulfilling their obligations, including vocal and choreography trainings.[16] In January 2015, Văn Production started a lawsuit against the singer for wrongful termination and deformation.[46] A law adviser pointed out to VnExpress that the both's contract was a service-level agreement which didn't rule anything about contractual termination, therefore, the singer had every right to terminate his.[16] It was reported in early 2015 that Tùng had signed with WePro Entertainment, while still being managed by his former company.[46]

2015–2017: The Remix, concerts and launch of M-TP Entertainment

In January 2015, Tùng joined in a team with disc jockey Trang Moon and music producer SlimV, to compete on the first season of television series The Remix.[47][48] His team would go against other notable acts, such as Đông Nhi and Tóc Tiên, to create the best remix work on the program.[47] Tùng's performance each week received much media coverage.[49][50] However, he quit after six episodes, citing health issues.[51] Two new songs the singer debuted on the show, "Thái Bình mồ hôi rơi" and "Khuôn mặt đáng thương", were released as singles in the following February and March, respectively.[50][52][53]

In June 2015, he recorded "Tiến lên Việt Nam ơi!" in support of Vietnam's team at the Southeast Asian Games.[58] Three of his other singles, "Ấn nút nhớ... Thả giấc mơ" (written for an advertising campaign of Omo)[59], "Âm thầm bên em"[60] and "Buông đôi tay nhau ra"[61], were released from June to December 2015. Although they achieved moderate commercial success compared to their predecessors, "Âm thầm bên em" still earned him a Green Wave Award for Single of the Year.[62][63]

In July 2015, eight thousand tickets of his first major concert in Ho Chi Minh City, M-TP & Friends, sold out in two weeks.[60] Participated as the show's opening acts were his castmates in Dandelion: Hari Won, Phạm Quỳnh Anh, Ngô Kiến Huy and Hứa Vĩ Văn.[64] At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, Tùng was honored with an award for Best Southeast Asian Act and a nomination for Best Asian Act.[65][66] From December 2015 to January 2016, Tùng's two-date concert tour, M-TP Ambition - Chuyến bay đầu tiên, was embarked in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.[67][68] In his autobiography Chạm tới giấc mơ (2017), he called the tour one of his life's "unforgettable failures."[5] It was reported that only half of the tickets from the first concert were sold[69]; and while many critics appreciated the singer's stage presence, others felt the shows' content was lacking.[67][68] Two songs he debuted on stage, "Remember Me" and "Như ngày hôm qua", were released as singles in December 2015.[70][71] Tùng's YouTube channel released recordings of the concerts in November 2016.[72]

In January 2016, he guest judged an episode of The RemixVorlage:'s second season and endorsed Oppo Electronics' Tết campaign with the song "Một năm mới bình an".[73][74] At the 11th Dedication Music Award in April, he became the youngest person to ever received the prestigious Singer of the Year award, beating out artists such as Trần Thu Hà, Tùng Dương and Hồng Nhung.[1] He was also named Most Favorite Male Artist at that year's Zing Music Awards.[75] Tùng's single released in August, "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau", was heavily criticized for carrying close resemblances to Charlie Puth's song "We Don't Talk Anymore" and BTS's song "Fire".[76] This even led two musicians, Tùng Dương and Vũ Cát Tường, to speak out against the singer.[77] At the end of 2016, "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau" became Google Vietnam's most searched song of the year and YouTube's eleventh most disliked video of the year.[78][79] It was also awarded a WebTVAsia Award for Most Popular Video in Vietnam.[80]

Due to creative disputes happened since the M-TP Ambition tour, Tùng announced that he had ended his contract with WePro in December 2016.[81][36] He established his own record label, M-TP Entertainment, and released three singles in early 2017: "Lạc trôi"[82], "Nơi này có anh"[83] and "Bình yên những phút giây".[84] The music video for "Lạc trôi" marked a visual transition for the singer and was described as a "play on Asian stereotypes," such as gold thrones and statues of dragons.[85][86] Green Wave and WeChoice Awards later awarded it the Single of the Year and Most Favorite Music Video titles, respectively.[87][88] Both songs were two of the fastest Asian music videos to gain a hundred million views on YouTube, and also, two of that year's top streaming tracks in Vietnam.[83][89] His last solo release under WePro, "Bình yên những phút giây", was a single written as part of a promotion for green tea brand Không Độ.[84]

2017–present: m-tp M-TP and Chạm tới giấc mơ

On April 1, 2017, Tùng released the compilation album m-tp M-TP to commemorate his fifth anniversary in the music industry.[90] Its physical version was released only in USB flash drive format, and contained most of his past tracks and new remixes.[91] A total of one thousand copies were reported to have been sold at the album's signings in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.[92][93] The SlimV remix of "Remember Me" from the compilation was later released as a single.[94] In June 2017, Tùng performed a highly-publicized 12-minute set at the Viral Fest Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, and conducted a second M-TP & Friends concert in Hanoi in the following month.[95][96] He went on to starred in Âm bản (2017), a short film sponsored by Oppo, and contributed vocal on "Gia đình tôi chọn", a single celebrating WePro's fifteenth anniversary in that August.[97][98]

The singer's first autobiography titled Chạm tới giấc mơ, was published on September 30, 2017.[99] Its content detailed Tùng's early life and his time working with Văn Production and WePro Entertainment, but excluded the controversies surrounding his career and his then-relationship status.[3][100] 10,000 copies of the book were sold after two days of release.[99] He was later awarded with a Mnet Asian Music Award for Vietnamese Breakout Artist[101], a Keeng Young Award for Most Favorite Male Artist[102], a V Live Award for Best V Star[103] and a WeChoice Award for Breakout Artist.[87] In May 2018, Tùng's single, "Chạy ngay đi (Run Now)", was released alongside an accompanied music video that features Thai actress Davika Hoorne.[104]

Writing in Chạm tới giấc mơ, Tùng recalled he frequently listened to his grandparents singing Quan họ, a Vietnamese folk music style originated from Bắc Ninh, during childhood. As a result, the signature vocal style affected his way of singing slur notes, while Vietnamese folk music in general have also inspired his work.[5] The singer later grew up listening to artists such as Quang Vinh, whom he idolized as a child, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.[4] Tùng has also been influenced by the Vietnamese underground hip hop scene, and K-pop acts including Big Bang, Super Junior and TVXQ.[4] Following the passing of Thái Bình-born composer An Thuyên in 2015, the musician claimed Thuyên was the biggest influence on his artistry.[105] He also expressed an appreciation for Thuyên when the composer defended him during the midst of controversies surrounding "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" in 2014.[106]

Musically, the musician's early releases contain elements of pop, contemporary R&B and hip hop.[107][108] He followed electronic dance music later in his career, with one of the first releases in this genre being the tropical house-oriented "Chúng ta không thuộc về nhau" (2016).[107][85] Some of his productions also incorporated Vietnamese traditional musical instruments, most notably "Lạc trôi" (2017).[58][73][85] It was a future bass track blended with the sounds of đàn tranh and sáo.[85] In a 2014 interview, the singer revealed that most of his romantic lyrics were inspired by Korean dramas and his former high school crush.[109] The latter inspiration was most evident in the single "Em của ngày hôm qua" (2013).[109] Many of his early tracks also referred to rain, and subsequently, media outlets gave him the nickname "The Rain Prince".[110][111][112] On another note, "Không phải dạng vừa đâu" and "Remember Me" (2015) were written in reply to the backlash he faced throughout his career.[113][114] The two tracks had him performed in his signature rap vocals, which over the years received somewhat divided reception from the public.[115][116][117] Besides electronic keyboard, he also played piano.[2][118]

Public image and achievements

Forbes Vietnam and Thể thao & Văn hóa both labelled the singer "an image of the Vietnamese version of K-pop,"[25][26] while Eurovision Asia Song Contest credited Tùng for "pushing boundaries and mixing genres, all the while crafting a deliberately androgynous image."[86] Thể thao & Văn hóaVorlage:'s Cung Ly pointed out Tùng's knowing of how to "smoothly" cooperate originality with the usual style of K-pop was the reason for his success.[26] However, public reception throughout his early career had been strongly polarized.[119] Due to his past frequent copyright issues, his work were being constantly compared to other foreign songs.[11][25] Phan T. Trang of Forbes Vietnam observed since the releases of "Lạc trôi" and "Nơi này có anh", the public have been more "generous and open" when they saw a mature and improved image in the singer. Nevertheless, Trang added that the industry was still carying doubts about his creativity.[25]

In 2015, WeChoice Awards named him one of their five Inspiration Ambassadors, which was the awards show's top honor.[120] They also voted him one of the ten Most Influential People in Vietnam of 2014 and 2017, and one of the five Most Influential Artists of 2015.[121][122][87] In May 2016, former President of the United States Barack Obama mentioned Tùng during a portion of his speech which discussed the impact of social media on young Vietnamese people. The speech was part of Obama's town hall meeting with members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative in Ho Chi Minh City.[123] In 2018, Forbes Vietnam included Tùng in their yearly 30 Under 30 list.[124] Tùng has also been included on the Green Wave Awards' top five Most Favorite Singers (Top Hit board) list on three consecutive occasions since 2015.Vorlage:Efn[63][125][88]

Stylistically, the singer has been described as a fashion icon, despite his fashion and music having been repeatedly compared to South Korean musician G-Dragon and members of his group, Big Bang.[126][1] In 2017, Vietnamese Elle magazine gave him a Style Award for Most Stylish Male Singer.[127] His fan base, Sky, has a large following in the country.[24] He has also endorsed for various brands and companies, including Oppo[128], Yamaha[129] and Jollibee.[130] In June 2017, Oppo launched a limited-edition phone line, Sơn Tùng M-TP Limited Edition F3.[128] A pair of shoes from Biti's Hunter collection sold out after its product placement in "Lạc trôi" music video. Biti's recognized it as one of the factors that pushed their 300% boost in sales and helped to revive the brand in 2017.[131]

In September 2016, Tùng's red carpet interview at The Face VietnamVorlage:'s first season finale went viral.[132][133] He appeared with a temporary tattoo—which was identical to one of German model Daniel Bamdad—and claimed it was his idea.[132] The singer went on to misspell the word "tattoo" and stated: "Mình thích thì mình vẽ lên thôi" ("I drew it on my face because I liked it").[132][133] It eventually inspired memes, remixes and original songs from Hồ Ngọc Hà, Noo Phước Thịnh and Only C.[134][133] Only C's song, "Yêu là "tha thu"", which has a title that is a pun on the "tattoo" misspelling, later served as the soundtrack for the film Em chưa 18 (2017) and became a successful hit.[135][136] "Mình thích thì mình làm thôi" (roughly means "doing something just because one like it") subsequently won a WeChoice Award for Viral Word or Catchphrase of the Year.[137]
