Stephen Batman

Stephan Batman (* in Bruton, Somerset; † 1584)war ein britischer Kleriker, Übersetzer und Autor.

Batman wurde in Bruton, Somerset, einer kleinen Stadt in England, geboren und erhielt dort eine primäre Schulbildung.

Batman ging anschließend nach Cambridge, wo er einen angesehenen Ruf als Gelehrter und Prediger hatte. Es wird angenommen, dass Batman auch Bateman war, der 1534 den Titel LL.B., Bachelor of Laws, erhielt und zu dieser Zeit Priester und Student im 6. Lehrjahr gewesen ist.

Später stellte Erzbischof Parker Batman als seinen Hauskaplan ein und gab ihm Beschäftigung in der Sammlung der Bibliothek (engl.: collection of the library), die heutzutage im Corpus Christi College, Cambridge aufbewahrt wird. Batman behauptete, er hätte 6700 Bücher für den Erzbischof zusammengetragen, es wird allerdings vermutet, dass es sich dabei um eine Übertreibung handelt.

Im Jahr 1573 wurde Batman Schuldirektor in Merstham, Surrey. Außerdem war Batman als Arzt der Theologie und Pfarrer tätig. Er wurde 1582 Hauskaplan von Baron Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon (1526 - 1596). Darüberhinaus residierte Batman eine zeitlang in Leeds, Kent.
