Bonnie Tyler
Bonnie Tyler (geboren als Gaynor Hopkins; * 8. Juni 1951 in Skewen, Neath) ist eine walisische Sängerin. Durch ihre markante, raue Stimme ist sie als "weiblicher Rod Stewart" bekannt geworden.
Leben
Sie wuchs in einer Arbeiterklassenfamilie mit sechs Kindern auf. Ihr Vater war Bergmann, während ihre Mutter, ein Opernfan, die Liebe zur Musik mit ihren Kindern teilte. In ihrer Jugend sang Bonnie Tyler in einer Gruppe mit dem Namen "Bobby Wayne and the Dixies", danach gründete sie ihre eigene Band und nannte sie "Imagination". Sie änderte mehrfach ihren Namen, bis sie sich "Bonnie Tyler" nannte. Nahezu ein Jahrzehnt lang trat sie mit ihrer Band in Kneipen und Nachtclubs in ganz Südwales auf.
1975 produzierte Bonnie Tyler ihre erste Single mit dem Namen "My My Honeycomb" bei RCA Records, die jedoch nicht in die Musikcharts gelangte. Ihre zweite Single "Lost In France" zeigte, wie scheinbar bedeutungslos Wörter auf dem Papier im Vergleich zu einem Song sein können. Die Single bewies das Potential ihrer leistungsfähigen Stimme und gelangte in die Top 10 der britischen Popmusikcharts. Die Single wurde auch auf dem europäischen Kontinent veröffentlicht und wurde dort zu einem noch größeren Erfolg. Über Jahrzehnte blieb dieser Song einer der beliebtesten ihrer Fans.
Ihr Erfolg mit "Lost In France" veranlasste Tyler 1977, ihr erstes Album aufzunehmen. Dieses Album mit dem Titel "The World Starts Tonight" hatte nur einen bescheidenen Erfolg, brachte ihr aber genug Geld ein, um Europa bereisen zu können. Vor der Freigabe des Albums unterzog sich Tyler einer Operation, um Knötchen auf ihren Stimmbändern zu entfernen. Da sie sich den Anweisungen ihres Arztes, nicht sprechen zu dürfen, widersetzte, nahm ihre Stimme eine besonders raue Qualität an. Damit schien ihre Karriere im Musikgeschäft zu Ende zu sein. Mit ihrer folgenden Single, die sie zum internationalen Star machte, bewies sie jedoch das Gegenteil: Der Song "It's A Heartache" aus ihrem zweiten Album "Natural Force", bei dem sie die ganze Energie ihrer heiseren Stimme einsetzte, erreichte die Top 5 in Großbritannien, auf dem europäischen Kontinent und in den USA. Zudem unternahm sie ihre erste Tour in den Staaten.
Nach diesem Erfolg erhielten die folgenden Aufnahmen nur mäßige Annahme. Das änderte sich, als sie 1982 mit CBS Records einen Vertrag unterzeichnete. Ihr Album "Faster Than The Speed Of Night" wurde zu einem internationalen Knüller und die Single "Total Eclipse of the Heart", komponiert von Jim Steinman, erklomm die Charts weltweit und blieb für Wochen auf Platz 1. Das millionenfach verkaufte Album eroberte die Musikwelt im Sturm und brachte Tyler 1983 eine Grammy-Nominierung für die beste Popsängerin und den Song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" ein. 1984 erhielt sie erneut eine Grammy-Nominierung als beste Rockmusikerin und für den Song "Here She Comes."
1984 hatte sie einen weiteren Haupterfolg mit der Single "Holding Out For A Hero", welcher häufig als der Smash Hit ihres Œuvres gilt. Das musikalisch Besondere an diesem Song ist die Verwendung eines über vier Takte nach oben sequenzierten verminderten Septakkordes zwischen Bridge und Coda, ein in der populären Musik äußerst unüblicher Akkord.
1987 sang sie den Titelsong Islands des gleichnamigen Albums von Mike Oldfield. 1991 verhalf ihr Dieter Bohlen zu einem Comeback mit dem Titel "Bitterblue", den er unter dem Pseudonym Howard Houston schrieb. Insgesamt produzierten Dieter Bohlen und Bonnie Tyler drei gemeinsame erfolgreiche Alben ("Bitterblue", "Angel Heart" und "Silhouette In Red"), ehe sie Plattenfirma und Produzent wechselte. In den Jahren danach ließen ihre Erfolge nach, bis sie 2004 von der französischen Sängerin Kareen Antonn zu einem Duett überredet wurde. "Si Demain", eine französische Version von "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", wurde im Januar 2004 veröffentlicht und erreichte in den französischen, belgischen und polnischen Charts Platz 1.
