NCT 127

The unit debuted on July 7, 2016, with their first extended play (EP) NCT #127. The group composed of nine members: Mark, Yuta, Jaehyun, Johnny, Doyoung, Taeyong, Haechan, Taeil, and Winwin. Members Doyoung and Johnny were added to the unit on December 27, 2016. Their unit name was acronym for Neo Culture Technology and 127 marks the longitude coordinate of Seoul.
History
Pre-debut: SM Rookies and NCT
All nine members of NCT 127 were originally part of SM Rookies.[1] In January 2016, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man announced a new boy group, with several different units to be based in countries around the world.[2]
Taeyong, Mark, Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun debuted as members of the first unit NCT U.[3] NCT 127 was officially announced on July 1, consisting of NCT U members, Taeyong, Taeil, Mark and Jaehyun, along with three new members: Winwin, Yuta, and Haechan (formerly Donghyuck).[4] Their debut stage was held on Mnet's M Countdown, where they performed the singles "Fire Truck" and "Once Again".[5]
2016: Debut and new members
NCT 127 made their official debut with their EP NCT #127 on July 10, 2016.[6] The lead single "Fire Truck" debuted at number 2 on the Gaon Album Chart, and topped the charts by the third week of its release.[7] It also charted at number 2 on Billboard World Albums Chart.[8][9]
On December 6, the music video for "Good Thing" was released, with Yuta, Taeyong, Jaehyun, Mark and Winwin. On December 20, NCT 127 released the music video for "Switch", featuring NCT U, NCT Dream and SM Rookies member Hansol.[10]
On December 27, SM Entertainment announced the addition of two new members to NCT 127: Johnny and NCT U's Doyoung.[11]
2017: Limitless and Cherry Bomb
On January 5, the music video for "Limitless" was released.[12] The second EP NCT #127 Limitless was released on January 9.[13] The album debuted atop on Gaon Album Chart and Billboard World Albums Chart.[14][15]
The third EP Cherry Bomb was released on June 14, with the lead single of the same name.[16] The singles "Cherry Bomb" and "0 Mile" were both performed on M Countdown for their comeback stage.[17] "Cherry Bomb" was chosen by Billboard as one of the best K-pop songs of 2017.[18]
2018–present: NCT 2018: Empathy and Japanese debut
NCT 127 promoted alongside NCT U and Dream as NCT 2018 for the first half of 2018. On March 14, NCT 127 released the single "Touch", alongside NCT's first studio album NCT 2018 Empathy.[19]
On May 23, 2018, NCT 127 released their Japanese debut EP Chain under Avex Trax.[20] The album peaked at number 2 on the Oricon Charts.[21]
