Die Rockgruppe Nektar wurde 1969 von den britischen Musikern Roye Albrighton (Gitarre), Allan "Taff" Freeman (Keyboards), Ron Howden (Schlagzeug) und Derek "Mo" Moore (Bass) zusammen mit Mick Brockett (Lichteffekte) in Hamburg gegründet. Den Musikstil kann man unter ´symphonischer Rock´ (auch Bombast-Rock) einordnen. Die Stücke sind voller Brüche und Tempiwechsel, in manchen Stücken werden andere Musiker zitiert.


Biographie

Derek ´Mo´ Moore und Ron Howden waren sich 1964 in Frankreich begegnet, wo beide in zwei verschiedenen Bands in amerikanischen Armeekasinos auftraten. Aus dem Duo wird ein Trio, als die beiden Allan ´Taff´ Freeman in Deutschland treffen, das sich PROPHECY nennt. Als sich Nektar bildet, lässt sich die Band in einem Bauernhaus im Odenwald (Hessen) nieder.

Das Debut-Album "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" erschien 1971, ein sinfonisches Werk, von dem Roye Albrighton sagte, sein einziger Nachteil bestehe darin, dass man die LP umdrehen müsse.

1972 erscheint eine Nektar-LP in den amerikanischen Charts. "A Tab in the Ocean" wurde eigens für die Vereinigten Staaten neu abgemischt. Diese Aufnahme mit mehr Tempo und klarer zu unterscheidenden Instrumenten sollte den Geschmack der US-Amerikaner besser treffen.

1974 wird die LP ´Remember The Future´ in den USA vergoldet. Kurze Zeit später erreicht auch ´Down To Earth´ amerikanisches Gold. Die Gruppe entschließt sich zu einer USA-Tournee und erzielt einen Achtungserfolg. Mehr als 100.000 Amerikaner wollen Nektar sehen. Kennzeichnend für die Live-Auftritte der Band war die Lightshow, die auf großen Leinwänden hinter den Musikern vom "Lichtmusiker" Brockett virtuos inszeniert wurde.

1976 verlässt Albrighton die Band. Das Album "Magic is a Child" wird mit dem Gitarristen und Sänger Dave Nelson aufgenommen, findet jedoch nicht die Beachtung, die frühere Werke von Nektar erhalten hatten. Es ist die einzige LP in dieser Besetzung. 1980 finden sich die Altmeister Albrighton und Freeman noch einmal zusammen, um mit Carmine Rojas am Bass und David Prater am Schlagzeug "Man in the Moon" zu produzieren. Danach war es lange still um Nektar.

2001 wurde Nektar von den früheren Gründungsmitgliedern Albrighton und Freeman zusammen mit Ray Hardwick (Schlagzeug) wiederbelebt und bewies, dass sie den Anschluss ans nächste Jahrhundert gefunden hatte. 2002 tourte die Band in der Originalbesetzung zunächst in den USA, es folgten Konzerte in Großbritannien und Deutschland. Dem Bassisten Moore wurde jedoch der Tournee-Stress zu viel, so dass er sein Instrument niederlegte. Er wurde ersetzt durch Randy Dembo, der auch auf der "Evolution"-CD mitspielt. Seit September 2004 ist Tom Hughes an den Tasten, insbesondere an der Hammond-Orgel, zu finden.
