Vorlage:Cleanup Mitchelstown Castle was burned down shortly after the independence of the Irish republic in 1922. The castle was famous for having more windows than that of Buckingham palace in London. The owners of the castle - the Kingstons - were obliged to seal one window so as not to be seen as grander than the Royals in Buckingham.

Despite efforts the secure funding to rebuild the castle after the fire it was demolished and the stone used to build the Abbey at Mount Melleray in the Knockmealdown mountains.
