The Emoji Movie (previously known as Emojimovie: Express Yourself) is an upcoming 2017 American 3D computer-animated film directed by Tony Leondis and written by Leondis, Eric Siegel and Mike White.[1] Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the film will be released on August 4, 2017, by Columbia Pictures.[2]

Synopsis

The film will center on Gene, a multi-expressional emoji, as he sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji.[3][4]

Cast

Production

On July 21, 2015, it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation had won the bidding war, against Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, of an animated film centered on emoji, based on the script by Eric Siegel and Tony Leondis, with Leondis also directing the film. Michelle Raimo Kouyate would produce the film.[9] At 2016 CinemaCon, the film was officially announced and it was revealed that it would be set in the digital world in a smartphone.[10]

In July 2016, T. J. Miller was announced[5] as lead Emoji Gene in a tweet by Sony Pictures Animation[11] on World Emoji Day. In October 2016, it was announced that Ilana Glazer and James Corden will be joining the cast as well.[4] In December 2016, the film's title was renamed from Emojimovie: Express Yourself, to simply The Emoji Movie.[12]

On December 20, 2016, a teaser trailer for the film was released.[1]

Release

In November 2015, Sony scheduled the film to be released on August 11, 2017.[13] A year later, it was moved forward to August 4, 2017, with Sony's Baby Driver taking its date.[2]
