coop@home is the online supermarket of the Coop Cooperative. Its product range includes more than 13'000 items for daily consumption as well as over 1,200 wines, and a large selection of spirits. There are over 125 delivery vehicles in the coop@home fleet.
History
coop@home began operations on August 24, 2001, delivering in and Around Zurich. Its original name was Remote Ordering, and the range at the time comprised around 3’000 products.
The delivery area gradually expanded to include Basel, Berne, Aargau and Central Plateau, Zug, Biel/Bienne, Lake Geneva and Eastern Switzerland. This expansion occurred between May 2003 and August 2005.
There was a merger of the online supermarket and Wineshop to form coop@home. With an additional 4’000 items, the product range now included over 12’000 products and, at the same time, a gift shop was launched, with a new look on 13 August 2006.
Expansion to mobile devices
On 23 November 2008, coop@home started to deliver a full product range, including fresh produce. All products are now delivered to wherever Swiss Post delivers parcels.
Since 31 May 2009, customers began to be able to order through their iPhones, using the coop@home mobile application. There are now iPad and Android apps as well. These applications are free.
Since October 2010, customers have also been able to use the coop@home online shop in English[1].
Since November 2010, coop@home has exclusively issued electronic delivery notes and invoices, saving 5.9 tonnes of paper each year (which equates to 1.1 million printed pages).
In May 2011, the range of spirits was increased to over 400 products.
Leadership
Rolf Zeller, founding member of coop@home, left Coop at the end of December 2011. His successor is Philippe Huwyler.
Innovations
On 23 November 2011, coop@home launched Switzerland's first Drive In for groceries for customers in the greater Zurich area. Customers order online and the shopping is placed in the boot of their car on the way home.
In December 2012, coop@home opens its second Drive In in Bachenbülach. It is the first Pick Up point integrated into a sales outlet.
On 29 November 2011, coop@home introduced another nationwide first in online shopping – mobile shopping. A pilot project at Coop Bahnhofsbrücke in Zurich allowed customers to simply scan a product’s EAN code using the mobile shopping wand and have their shopping delivered to their home.
As of January 2013, coop@home customers were provided another delivery option: PickPost. Customers now can pick up their shopping at one of 32 PickPost post offices or an SBB ticket counter around Switzerland.
The first Pick Up point in western Switzerland opened in Allaman on 28 May 2013, expanding the servie to Western Switzerland.
A collaboration with Google gives rise to Coop's first virtual sales outlet. In a micro kitchen, employees can assemble their shopping basket at coop@home and have it delivered to the company's address at Google in Zurich. This is another example of coop@home's pioneering role in online supermarket innovations.
Further developing the successful Mobile Shopping Wall at Coop Bahnhofsbrücke in Zurich, in September 2013 coop@home launches more shopping walls at central stations in three locations, where commuters can make use of waiting time while travelling home to do their shopping at the Shopping Wall.[2]
In May 2014, coop@home opens another Shopping Wall at SAP Regensdorf and offers SAP employees special delivery terms (for orders placed by 8:15 a.m., SAP employees can have their shopping delivered to their workplace the same day).
In September 2014, coop@home opens a second logistics centre in Bussigny. An even more extensive choice of delivery slots are now available in French-speaking Switzerland, with later order cut-off times and more regional products. For example, orders placed in Lausanne before 2:30 p.m. are delivered from 6 p.m. onwards.
At the end of 2014, coop@home launches a prototype of the world's first 3.5 tonne carbon construction delivery vehicle. The reduced unladen weight of the new delivery vehicle enables it to carry a heavier load, meaning that deliveries can be made to more customers with fewer journeys. This saves fuel and reduces CO2 emissions.
On 17 December 2014, coop@home expands its network of Drive In stations, with the "Zurich Airport Collection Point". Customers can collect their coop@home order at the Coop store in the Zurich Airport (on the 1st floor, next to check-in 3) daily until 11 p.m.
With Pick Up, on 3 August 2015, Coop brings together the coop@home concept and physical stores, implementing retail cross-channel. Customers can order online and conveniently collect their shopping in store, without any delivery charges (orders placed by 12 noon can even be collected the same day). During the pilot phase, this new service is available in Coop outlets in Buchs, Dielsdorf, Dietikon Silbern, Geroldswil, Oberengstringen, Zurich Bahnhofbrücke, Zurich Hönggermarkt and Zurich Rütihof.
coop@home has had a new look since 5 July 2016. As well as its new design, the new shop is faster than before, features an optimized search function and a new order summary which gives customers a clear overview of their shopping basket. The site also has a mobile responsive design, making it easier to use on mobile devices. coop@home platform awarded with E-Commerce-Award 2016.[3][4]
