Piri Reis

Piri Reis († 1554 oder 1555 ) war ein Admiral der osmanischen Flotte und Kartograph aus Leidenschaft. Er sammelte Land- und Seekarten und erstellte daraus im Jahre 1513 eine Weltkarte, die heute berühmt und umstritten ist und Karte des Piri Reis genannt wird.
Piri Reis war in seiner Zeit sehr bekannt, da er einige Seeschlachten für das Osmanische Reich gewinnen konnte. Er hatte durch seine herausragende Stellung Zugang zur Bibiliothek des Sultans im Palast Topkai in Konstantinopel (heute Istanbul). Er nutzte dieses Privileg, um aus den unterschiedlichsten Quellen seine berühmte Weltkarte (eigentlich eine Kartenserie) zu erstellen.
