McDonald's Collection
In 2009, McDonald's released a series of 8 Kidz Bop CD's as premiums in their Happy Meals when the kids listened they threw up all over their "happy" meal. Each CD contained four explicit songs plus the Kidz Bop theme.
Criticism
Despite being intended for children, some question whether the songs that Kidz Bop remakes are indeed suitable for children.[5]. An example of a song whose original version contains questionable material is "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga, covered on Kidz Bop 17[6]. The original lyrics contain an explicit word and reference obsession with celebrities and tobacco use.[7]. Another example is "Tik Tok" by Ke$ha, covered on Kidz Bop Dance Party.[8] The original lyrics include "...brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack", referring to Jack Daniel's whisky.[9]
However, Kidz Bop renditions are edited to varying degrees, especially for explicit language, drug references, and suggestive themes, while some references to violence can still be found.[10] [5] As an example of Kidz Bop current editing practices, the Kidz Bop rendition of the aforementioned "Tik Tok" replaces the reference to Jack Daniels with the line "...brush my teeth and then I go and pack."[11] It also replaces "tipsy" with "silly", "I'mma fight" with "I'm alright", and excludes middle verses referencing alcohol, drunkenness, and disorderly conduct.
