Allerheiligen-Kathedrale (Kairo)
All Saints' Cathedral, Cairo [1] is the mother church of the Episcopal/Anglican Diocese of Egypt.
The current cathedral is located in Zamalek - an upper class residential area of Cairo which is on an island in the middle of the River Nile.[2]
There have been 2 previous Cathedrals in Cairo, the most recent was knocked down to make way for the 6th October Bridge.
The church is in the shape of a cross at ground level, and a crown at the top. It is a modern style - built of concrete, said to resemble a bedouin tent. With the 'Nile Lily' roof visible around Zamalek. It has been called a 'modernist-inspired concrete shell structure' by the Cairo Observer. [3]
The Cathedral Compound houses the church itself, the Diocese offices, the office of the Bishop and various other projects and services. Including EpiscoCare[4], the diocese NGO and Refuge Egypt[5] serving Cairo's refugee community.
The church hosts a variety of congregations - Arabic speaking, English speaking and Sudanese are the larger ones with other groups also using the premises for worship.
