Vorlage:Pp-blp Vorlage:Use mdy dates Vorlage:Multiple issues Vorlage:Infobox person Mark Edward Fischbach (born June 28, 1989), known by his YouTube handle Markiplier, is an American actor, voice actor, comedian, internet personality, video game commentator and philanthropist. Originally from O'ahu, Hawaii, Fischbach began his career in Cincinnati, Ohio; and is currently based in Los Angeles, California.[1] As of ~1:00 PM EST, on October 24th 2014, his channel has over 4,000,000 subscribers,[2][3] over one billion total views, and is the 139th most subscribed channel on YouTube.[4] Fischbach specializes in Let's Play gameplay commentary videos, commonly of survival horror and action video games. He is best known for his comedic gameplay commentary.[5][6]

Early life

Vorlage:BLP sources section Fischbach was born on an American military base in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 28, 1989. He is the younger brother of webcomic author and artist Thomas Jason Fischbach (known for the popular webcomic TwoKinds[7][8]).

Shortly after Fischbach was born, his father retired from the Army, and his parents moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father found a job as an artist for a publishing company.

Fischbach's father introduced him to computers at a young age. Fischbach was immediately hooked, although he first expressed a serious interest in video gaming after being introduced to a Super Nintendo Entertainment System that Tom received for Christmas.

Fischbach used a tax return to purchase a camera and started a YouTube channel under the name Markiplier.[9]

Career

Internet videos

Fischbach first joined YouTube on May 26, 2012, creating a channel under the name of Markiplier. Fischbach's first uploaded video, titled "Amnesia Reaction Compilation", consists of Fischbach's reactions while commentating on the horror video game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. As of June 2014, the video has garnered over 597,850 views.[10] Shortly afterwards, YouTube banned Fischbach's AdSense account. Fischbach appealed to YouTube as a last effort, but the appeal was ultimately lost.[11] Because of this, a new and current channel was created and dubbed MarkiplierGAME. This account has a rapidly growing population and consists of at least four million subscribers as of October 2014, and has also been able to change the account name from "MarkiplierGAME" back to the name of Markiplier.

Prominent video game commentaries

Slender: The Eight Pages

Some of Fischbach's most popular videos are those of his Slender: The Eight Pages gameplay commentaries.[12] He has covered many various Slender variations, including Prison, Claustrophobia, Hospice, 7th Street, Mansion, and more. After multiple attempts, he dedicated a few of his videos to a serious playthrough of Slender: Haunt, which he eventually completed. He has yet to complete the original Slender: The Eight Pages, Slender: The ArrivalPflichtangabe Text für Zitat im Zitat fehlts bonus level Genesis, Anxiety, Flashlight, Carnival, and Christmas Special, the last of which he once said is truly horrifying in its own way, while also "destroying his childhood". Mark has considered Slender: The Nine Pages to be the scariest Slender game thus far.[13]

Drunk Minecraft

Fischbach’s first episode of Drunk Minecraft was uploaded to his channel on August 8, 2012, and rapidly became a fan favorite, as well as his most extensive series. The series is mainly centered around Fischbach, along with his two friends Bob "muyskerm" and Wade "Lordminion777", playing Minecraft while intoxicated. Its first season consisted of 32 episodes, and ran until early December 2012. After multiple requests, Fischbach uploaded the first episode of its second season on March 21, 2013. During the run of the second season, Fischbach, Bob & Wade added objectives to complete competitively, in order to become the "winner" of the episode. It has not been announced how long the second season will run for; however, Fischbach revealed during a Q&A session that Drunk Minecraft would be interrupted, as Drunk Minecraft member, Bob, moved away with the intention of finishing law school. The series returned on October 27, 2013, with an episode titled "DON'T KILL THE CHICKEN." It has since stopped being identified numerically (with older season 2 episodes losing their numbers in their titles). It returned again on September 19, 2014.

Amnesia series

Often citing Amnesia: The Dark Descent as a truly terrifying game, Fischbach has dedicated many of his videos to gameplay commentary of both Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and customized stories made for the game.

So far, his most acclaimed custom story playthroughs are of The Things in the Night and The Great Work, as well as the game's 'official' sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

The custom story, "A Late Night Drink," introduces his well known character, Tiny Box Tim.

The very first video Fischbach ever uploaded was titled Amnesia Reaction Compilation which was a video that included clips of him playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent and supplying commentary to the game.

SCP - Containment Breach

Fischbach's SCP - Containment Breach playthrough is easily one of his most extensive; as of August 2014, he has uploaded 44 episodes of the official version, along with various episodes of modded variations. He has also played a fan-made mod of the game, with which all in-game textures, sound effects, and audio tracks had been replaced with references to Fischbach's channel. After the release of version 0.7.1, Fischbach resumed filming gameplay videos of SCP - Containment Breach. He had previously stated that SCP had given him difficulty focusing, and scared him more than most horror video games he had played. After another halt, Fischbach resumed again, with the release of version 0.8 and (later on) 1.0. Still to this day Fischbach, will play a new update of SCP - Containment Breach upon release.

Indie horror games

Fischbach has played various indie horror games, having dedicated an entire playlist to them. He often takes suggestions from his subscribers, as well as finding them out himself.

Though he has received requests to play games built using RPG Maker, such as Ib or Mad Father, he has stated that he feels that such games are "silly, and aren't really his style". However, due to positive comments and reviews of the role-playing game, The Witch's House, Fischbach decided to begin a playthrough. Since The Witch's House, Fischbach has played Paranoiac, Mad Father, Ib, "Corpse Party", "Off", and "To The Moon"; and has asked his subscribers for more suggestions.

He has recently played the indie horror game Five Nights at Freddy's. He recorded three videos completing the main levels of the game, and released a fourth to test out and play through the game's two bonus levels, Night 6 and "Custom Night". A fifth video showing his successful completion of the Custom Night's hardest mode, with all enemies at their maximum AI level of 20, was also released. The first video's title and Fischbach himself stated that it was the scariest game he has played since Slender: The Eight Pages, and his initial play through of the game not only became one of his most-viewed videos, but is also widely credited with boosting the game's popularity, to the point where many other Let's Players on YouTube also played the game.[14][15][16]

Collaborations

In addition to his own commentary videos, Fischbach has worked together with a wide range of other YouTube personalities, collaborating on commentaries. At first, he began collaborating with fellow video game commentator and Let's Player, Yamimash, playing multiple Garry's Mod custom horror maps and an indie game called Slendytubbies. He has also collaborated with YouTubers Mangaminx and CinnamonToastKen, playing Castle Crashers, a 2D beat 'em up video game.

He has also played Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt, both Garry's Mod custom game modes, with YouTubers Mangaminx, Cryaotic, Pewdiepie, SeaNanners, CaptainSparklez, Yamimash, Jacksepticeye, Ohmwrecker, CinnamonToastKen, and his friends Bob and Wade.

Fischbach has also collaborated with YouTube sketch comedy duo Cyndago[17] to produce multiple skits;[18] most notable are "The Warfstache Affair",[19] "The Opinion Minions",[20] and "Danger in Fiction".[21] He recently shot a cameo in an upcoming music video by comedy band Ninja Sex Party called "Peppermint Creams" and is set to have a cameo in the comedy band Starbomb's next album.

In 2014, Fischbach provided narration for episodes of the video game webseries Did You Know Gaming? covering the game Team Fortress 2, the Doom series, and the Castlevania series.[22] In August 2014, Fischbach appeared on the channel SmoshGames for their series Button Bash, featuring the SmoshGames crew playing video games with other famous YouTube Let's Players, during which Fischbach played the comedic, physics-based game Turbo Dismount.[23] Fischbach had previously made a cameo appearance in the channel's teaser trailer for the Button Bash series, and is also set to appear in the upcoming Smosh movie.[24]

Charity work

Fischbach has hosted numerous charity livestreams[25] on Twitch through his Twitch channel.[26] His current goal is to host a charity livestream once every month. Along with having fans donate to charities directly, he offers exclusive, one-day-only merchandise, with all of the money raised from selling those items going to his charity of the month. In total, Fischbach, with the continuous support of his subscribers, has raised $482,479.14. Many also credit him as being one of the first on YouTube to actually begin these charity livestreams with dedication, which has since inspired many other major YouTubers to begin their own charity livestreams.
