Protonmail is an email service founded in 2013 at CERN by Jason Stockman, Andy Yen and Wei Sun.[1][2] In contrast to many Webmail services like Gmail or Hotmail, Protonmail encrypts emails before they are sent to the server.

The servers are located in Switzerland because it is outside of US and EU jurisdiction.[3]

Protonmail accepts Bitcoin.

Crowdfunding

Protonmail started a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo with the goal to raise 100,000 US-Dollar.

The PayPal account of Protonmail was frozen on 30th of June 2014.[4] A representative of PayPal stated that the company froze the account over the doubts of the legality of the encryption.[5]
