A World Beyond
Vorlage:Infobox film Tomorrowland is an upcoming science fiction film directed, co-written, and produced by Brad Bird and produced and co-written by Damon Lindelof.[1][2] It stars Britt Robertson, George Clooney, with Hugh Laurie as the primary villain.[3]
Walt Disney Studios announced the film under the working title 1952 until it was renamed, sharing its name with the futuristic themed land found at various Disney theme parks.[2][4] The Walt Disney Pictures film is scheduled to be released on December 12, 2014.[5]
Plot
Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”[6]
Cast
- George Clooney as Frank Walker, a grizzled inventor[7]
- Hugh Laurie as David Nix, the film's antagonist[8]
- Britt Robertson as Casey Newton, the film's heroine.[9][10]
- Raffey Cassidy as Athena, a robot[11]
- Thomas Robinson as a character who is described by insiders as “pivotal”[12]
- Kathryn Hahn as Ursula, a funny, scene-stealing role.[13]
- Judy Greer is in negotiations to star in the film.[14]
- Tim McGraw also is set to appear in the film. [15]
Development
The project was green-lit by Walt Disney Studios' Sean Bailey in June 2011 when Damon Lindelof signed to write and produce.[1] In May 2012, Brad Bird was hired as director.[16] Later that year in November, George Clooney entered negotiations to star in the film.[17] In February 2013, media reports revealed Hugh Laurie would play the villain.[3][18]
Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof, and Disney have not publicly discussed the plot. When asked whether the project was related to Disney's development of Star Wars Episode VII, Bird said no but confirmed Tomorrowland is a science fiction film.[19] Notwithstanding media speculation, Lindelof has said the film will not center on extraterrestrials.[20]
On January 23, 2013, nearly a week before the title change, Bird posted a picture on his Twitter page related to the project. The image showed a frayed cardboard box labeled 1952, supposedly uncovered from the Walt Disney Imagineering developmental unit,[21] and contained items like archival photographs of Walt Disney, Technicolor film, envelopes, a vinyl record, space technology literature, a 1928 copy of an Amazing Stories magazine (which introduced Philip Francis Nowlan's Buck Rogers character), and an unidentified metal object.[22] On April 13, 2013, media reports indicated that Michael Giacchino would compose the film music.[23] On July 18, 2013, an industry trade magazine reported Britt Robertson was cast as the lead.[24]
On August 10, 2013, Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof gave a presentation at the Disney D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. They opened the "1952" box and revealed many of its contents.[25] Later that day a pavilion was unveiled on the D23 Expo show floor which presented the items for close inspection by guests. There was also an accompanying iPhone app which took viewers through the exhibit much like you would experience a museum exhibit.
Principal photography commenced in Enderby, British Columbia on August 19, 2013, and will also film in Vancouver and Surrey, ending on January 15, 2014.[26][27][28] On October 7, 2013, Kathryn Hahn was cast as a character named Ursula.[13]
