Theodore Robert Long, also referred to as Teddy Long, (born September 15, 1955) is a sports entertainer, working on World Wrestling Entertainment's SmackDown! brand as its General Manager.

Career

NWA/WCW

Long started out as an errand boy for wrestlers Tommy Rich and Abdullah the Butcher. He eventually became a member of the ringcrew and was promoted to referee in the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions in 1985 as Teddy Long. He was a good referee until 1989 when he started to bend the rules for the heels. At the Chi-Town Rumble event, Teddy Long ran in and counted three, making Ricky Steamboat the NWA World Champion. On April 2, 1989 at the Clash of Champions in New Orleans, Long blatantly made a fast count allowing Mike Rotunda & "Dr. Death" Steve Williams to defeat the Road Warriors for the NWA World Tag Team Championship. After this match, the National Wrestling Alliance relieved Long of his refereeing duties.

Long became the manager of Doom (Ron Simmons and Butch Reed) and led them to the World Tag Team Titles. He also managed Chris Jericho, Johnny B. Badd, One Man Gang, Norman the Lunatic, "The Skyscrapers" (Sid Vicious, Dan Spivey & Mark Callous), Marcus Bagwell, 2 Cold Scorpio, Joey Maggs, Craig Pittman, Jim Powers, Ice Train, Bobby Eaton and Bobby Walker while in Jim Crockett Promotions and WCW.

WWF/WWE

Long came to the WWF in a refereeing position in the late 1990s, until September 2002 when he was taken off the road.

Perhaps his most notable managing stint came when managing D'Lo Brown, Rodney Mack, Christopher Nowinski, Rosey, Mark Henry and Jazz at different times, telling fans to get "Down wit' da Brown" and to "Back da Mack." He played a sort-of stereotypical "held-down" minority, using ebonics (such as, "Don't be drinkin' that Hate-orade." and "You know I'd look good on the dolla dolla bill.") His stable would be referred to by fans as "Thuggin' & Buggin' Enterprises." When he drafted to SmackDown!, he managed his second white wrestler, Mark Jindrak.

After Kurt Angle was fired from the General Managing position in mid-2004, Long became the new General Manager of SmackDown! His new position saw him as a face, giving the fans what they wanted and making matches that put heels at disadvantages, notably John "Bradshaw" Layfield. At first, he continued use of his "Hate-orade" talk, only not in stereotypical fashion. One example was when he stripped heel Booker T of the US Championship for "drinkin' Hate-orade." Long is the first ever African-American to become a GM in the WWE.

As part of the RAW vs. SmackDown! feud, he defeated then RAW GM Eric Bischoff at Survivor Series 2005 with the help of The Boogeyman.

However, Theodore Long still had problems with Booker T. When Booker T got injured during the best of 7 series for the WWE United States championship after Armageddon 2005, He told Theodore Long that he could not wrestle. Long's told to Booker T that because he could not wrestle, he will give the US title to Chris Benoit. Booker was angry. He told Theodore Long if he could get another wrestler to take his place. Theodore Long accepted Booker T's comments. Booker T chose Randy Orton to help him. Orton accepted and won the US title for Booker T. After Booker T got his US championship, his injury was over. But after The Royal Rumble 2006, he got injured again and complained to Theodore Long. during an edition of Smackdown, Chris Benoit had a title opportunity for the US title. Theodore long allowed Booker T to choose another wrestler to take his place. This time, it was Finlay. Booker T lost by disqualification. But the title could not change hands by disqualification. On another edition of Smackdown, Long anounced a number 1 contender match for the US championship and Booker T, who was still injured was watching at ringside. Chris Benoit won the match. Backstage Booker T was furious and kept on saying that he was not going to wrestle. Then Theodore Long saw Booker T and told him at No Way Out 2006, it will be Booker T vs Chris Benoit for the United States Championship. Long finally said to Booker T that if he could not wrestle, then he will lose his US title. Chris Benoit won the match and was congragulated by Theodore Long.

But the problem between Booker T and Theodore Long was not over. Booker T was furious about the Boogeyman playing mind games. Booker T was trying to put the blame on Theodore Long for not stopping the Boogeyman. Theodore Long said to Booker T that there will be a match at Saturday Night's Main Event, Booker T vs the Boogeyman. During Saturday Night's Main Event, Booker T said that he had his knee injured. So the match was cancelled. But Booker T was faking his injury and said that he is not hurt. He even did a little dance to prove it. During the next edition of Smackdown, Theodore Long told Booker T that he was sick and tired of the injuries. So Long showed Booker T a contract saying the Boogeyman vs Booker T with a special partner at WrestleMania 22. Theodore Long told Booker T to sign it. But Booker T refused to sign the contract. Then Long said to Booker T that he he did not sign the contract, then he will be fired. Booker T changed his mind and signed the contract. Theodore Long was happy, and told Booker T that his special partner will be his wife Sharmell. Booker T was so furious but he could do nothing.

Long appeared on the March 6, 2006 edition of RAW to announce that the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 22 would be an interpromotional match, including Rob Van Dam, Ric Flair and Shelton Benjamin. He then announced that he would hold qualifying matches on SmackDown! to decide which three of his superstars would compete. The three people who competed were Matt Hardy, Finlay and Bobby Lashley. However, SmackDown! fell short of winning.

At Judgment Day 2006 Long fired Melina & Johnny Nitro from SmackDown! On the following SmackDown, JBL suffered the same fate after losing the WWE United States Championship to Bobby Lashley and his Judgment Day rematch.

On the September 4th episode of Monday Night Raw, Thedore Long appeared to a tremendous ovation since that was his hometown. During a six-person, intergender tag match between Randy Orton, Edge, and Lita against Trish Stratus, Carlito, and John Cena, some fans began to chant Theodore's name.

On September 17th 2006 at the Raw PPV Unforgiven, Theodore Long was at the Air Canada Centre to see if John Cena would come to Smackdown, if John Cena lost the TLC match against Edge, but Cena won the match so he stayed on Raw.

Long has recently began to re-implement the NTI (New Talent Initiative). This is most likely because SmackDown! has been plagued with legitimate injuries as of late.

The following message appeared on WWE.com on September 27, 2006. "Sources close to Theodore Long have told WWE.com that SmackDown's General Manager plans to make a major announcement this afternoon at 3 p.m. ET on WWE.com. There is no word at this time as to what the General Manager has in mind. Check back this afternoon for Theodore Long's announcement." Long's announcement was later revealed to be that Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) signed a "Kayfabe" contract with SmackDown.
