Vorlage:Underconstruction Yair Shamir (born May 18, 1945) is an Israeli politician, businessman and former military officer. He is a member of the Yisrael Beiteinu party and son of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.

Biography

Shamir served in the Israeli Air Force as a pilot and advanced to the rank of colonel.[1] He was later CEO of Scitex and Elite, director of El Al Israel Airlines and director of Israel Aerospace Industries in 2005–2011, where he worked without pay. During this time, Shamir also managed a number of venture capital funds and hi tech companies.[2][3][4] In 2011 he became the director of the National Roads Company of Israel.[4] According to Shamir, when he voluntarily left the army to go into business, his father would not talk to him for several months because he had held service to the country higher than material gain. However, Shamir states that he moved to the business world to promote Israel's industry and not out of material considerations.[3]

He also chaired the board of the Shalem Center,[2] and was a board member of a number of higher education institutions, including the Tel Aviv University, the Ben Gurion University, the Technion and the Interdisciplinary Center.[3]
