Die Duryea Motor Wagon Company ist ein ehemaliger US-amerikanischer Automobilhersteller der Pionierzeit. Die Duryea-Brüder bauten 1893 das erste benzingetriebene Auto der USA; ihr Unternehmen gilt ausserdem als erster kommerzieller Autobauer in den USA.

Charles E. Duryea und seinem Bruder J. Frank Duryea
Brothers Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea of Chicopee Falls, MA are credited wîth building America's first gasoline-powered automobile in 1893. By 1895, Charles had received the first Únited States Patent for an auto. Frank won the nation's very first car race - the Chicago-Times Herald race - and the pair organized America's first auto manufacturer. In 1896, the Duryea Motor Wagon Company of Springfield, MA constructed 13 identical automobiles, making them the first American company to move from making a single car for sale to 'mass production' and thus most historians consider it the birth of the American automobile industry. Within two years the brothers dissolved their company and went their separate ways.
Springfield (1893-1898)
The first "car" built in America was a horse buggy with a 4-hp, single-cylinder engine, assembled by Charles and Frank Duryea in 1892-93. Their second car won America's first auto race, a 50-mile, nine-hour marathon from Chicago to Evanston, Ill., on Thanksgiving Day, 1895. Motorera.com: US-Automobilgeschichte
But the race had accomplished what Kohlstaadt had hoped it would: It introduced Americans to the motor-wagon and proved once and for all that the days of the horse and buggy were numbered. For his part, Frank Duryea returned to his shop in Massachusetts and got to work. In 1896, the Duryeas built 13 cars by hand--and thus they became the largest automobile factory in the United States.

Bruderzwist
Die Brüder gerieten ob der Patentierung ihres Motorwagens in Streit. Charles gewann, Frank wandte sich an die Presse. E.P. Ingersoll, Chefredaktor der Horseless Age liess in seinem Blatt im Februar 1896 durchblicken, dass Franks Anteil an der Entwicklung grösser war als von Charles zugegeben.

Lizenz-Nachbauten
Von 1896 bis ca. 1900 wurde der Duryea in Lizenz nachgebaut von der Canda Manufacturing Company in Carteret (New Jerse). Werkleiter war Charles E. Duryea der sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt mit seinem Bruder zerstritten hatte Kimes 238-239

Modell A (1919-1920)
Das erste Automobil von Du Pont, das Model A, wurde 1919 vorgestellt. Es war konventionell aufgebaut mit einem massiven Leiterrahmen, Hinterradantrieb und einem Vierzylindermotor eigener Konstruktion mit 4395 cm³ und einer Leistung von 55 bhp (41 kW).
