Luciobarbus ist eine Gattung der Karpfenfische (Cyprinidae). Die Gattung kommt in Nordafrika (Tunesien, Algerien und Marokko), auf der Iberischen Halbinsel in Kleinasien, im Kaukasus und in dessen nördlichen Vorland, in Mesopotamien, im westlichen Iran und im Einzugsgebiet des Kaspischen Meeres und des [Aralsee]]s. Sie wurde bereits 1843 von Johann Jakob Heckel aufgestellt, fand dann aber lange Zeit keine Anerkennung und ihre Arten wurden Barbus zugerechnet.
Merkmale
Luciobarbus is distinguished from Barbus s. str. by the shape of the lower lip (absence of papillae on the central part of the lower lip vs. central part of the lower lip completely covered by papillae), the number of teeth in the main row of pharyngeal teeth (only four pharyngeal teeth in main row, vs. five) (see Banarescu & Bogutskaya, 2003: 4), and molecular characters (see Tsigenopoulos et al., 2003).
Luciobarbus-Arten werden 23 cm bis 2,30 Meter [1] lang. Sie unterscheiden sich von den Barbus-Arten unter anderem durch die Form der Unterlippe, deren mittlere Abschnitt bei Luciobarbus keine Papillen trägt, während sie bei Barbus völlig mit Papillen besetzt ist. Außerdem ist die Anzahl der Zähne in der Hauptreihe der Pharyngealia unterschiedlich (vier bei Luciobarbus, fünf bei Barbus).
Als Synapomorphien der Gattung gelten:
1. The Exoccipitalia contacts the pterotic largely. 2. High medial process of the Urohyale, eine Sehnenverknöcherung im Schädel,. 3. Narrow exoccipital apophysis of the pterotic. 4. Wide 4th and 5th Infraorbitalia (Knochen um die Augen)
Description: Other characters shared by al1 the species are: 1. Anterior border of the Cleithrum senkrecht to the lower limb. 2. Wide basal plate of the Urohyale. 3. Tendency for a gesunken Pharyngealia teeth number in adult specimens; the fourth tooth of the external row becomes strong. 4. In adults crescent shaped masticatory surface to teeth. 5. Convex anterior border of the opercular. 6. Wide Ethmoid. 7. Small prevomer with a long and sharply pointed top. 8. Upper limb of the Cleithrum elongated and narrowed. 9. Large pharyngeal cartilage. 10. Basal plate of the pharyngeal bone extended downwards.
Die Gattungen Barbus und Luciobarbus trennten sich im späten Miozän vor etwa 8 Millionen Jahren. Die Aufspaltung folgte den sukzessiven plattentektonischen Bewegungen, die in der südlichen Mittelmeer-Region stattfanden. Im Pliozän vor etwa 2 Millionen Jahren folgte mit der Etablierung der heutigen Flusssysteme eine rasche Artbildung in beiden Gattungen.
