Naturally
"Naturally" is a song by American band Selena Gomez & the Scene from their 2009 debut album, Kiss & Tell. It was written by Antonina Armato, Tim James, and Devrim Karaoglu. It serves as the album's second single in the United States and Canada, and the lead single in international markets. The song is an up-tempo electropop song in which the lead singer sings about someone who is her perfect fit.[1] The song officially impacted U.S. mainstream radio on January 19, 2010.[2]
"Naturally" is the band's highest charting song to date, charting in the top twenty in multiple countries, and at seven in the United Kingdom, Hungary and Ireland. It was their first song to impact radio, and also the first to chart the U.S Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts, peaking at number-one on both charts. In April 2010, the song was certified Platinum by the CRIA for sales of 40,000 digital download units.[3] In May 2010 it was announced the song had shifted 1.2 million downloads in the US.[4]
Background
On an interview with Digital Spy , Selena Gomez was asked "how would she describe Naturally" she said: "It's just a feelgood song. It's fun, light and poppy. Basically it's about two people who have a connection with each other so they don't really have to force the feelings - they're just there. I think it's a good representation of the album because it's very energetic, lively and not too serious".[5]
Critical reception
Pop Justice selected "Naturally" as its song of the day on February 5, 2010. The site praised the song saying, "It's a cavalcade of cliche but 'Naturally' seems like a boundary-smashing avant garde curiosity when you put it alongside most other Hollywood Records output (ie it's not a dreadful load of old rubbish)."[6] Bill Lamb from About.com chose "Naturally" as one of the top tracks in "Kiss & Tell".[7]
Live performance
Selena Gomez and the Scene have performed the song on their House of Blues 2010 Tour. They also performed "Naturally" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show,[8][9] Selena & The Scene performed it in a Las Vegas segment of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest[10] and on Good Morning AmericaVorlage:Citation needed along with "More". "Falling Down" and "Naturally" were performed at the 2009 Teletón in Mexico.[11] On March 21, 2010 Selena Gomez & The Scene along with Justin Bieber played at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.Vorlage:Citation needed
Chart performance
After debuting its first week at sixty-five on Billboard US Hot Digital Songs,[12] holiday sales for the single subsequently pushed the song to jump to thirty-four.[12] These digital sales made the song the hot shot debut on the Billboard Hot 100, as it debuted at thirty-nine on the week labeled January 09, 2010,[12] eventually rising to twenty-nine on the Hot 100 and eighteen on the Canadian Hot 100.[13] The song was the most added song to mainstream radio on the week of its release.[14][15] On the week labeled February 13, 2010, due to radio impact, the song debuted at forty on the US Mainstream Top 40 (Pop Songs) chart, and was the hot shot debut at thirty-nine on the Hot Dance/Club Play Songs chart where it peaked at number one. It was also the fastest climbing single on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart, where it debuted at number 9 in its May 15, 2010 issue and two weeks later reached the number one position in its May 29, 2010 issue.[13] "Naturally" debuted at forty-six on the Australian Singles Chart[16] and at twenty on the New Zealand Singles Chart.[17]. "Naturally" entered and peaked on the UK Singles Chart at #7, the first Top 10 single for a Disney Channel star since Hilary Duff with her 2005 Single "Wake Up" which also charted at #7. The song has since spent five weeks inside the UK top 40.
Music video
The song's music video was filmed November 14, 2009,[1] and premiered on Disney Channel following the December 11, 2009 airing of Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation. The special effects of the video are more complex than that of the band's first single, "Falling Down". Lead singer Gomez said, "The video is very different from any other video that I've done," and added, "it has a lot more fierce clothes and a lot of fun colors."[1] Two alternate video versions were the Ralphi Rosario Mix and the other one was Dave Audé Mix released on March 10, 2010.[18][19]
