Gwendolyn Brooks (*7. Juni 1917; † 3. Dezember 2000) war „Poet Laureate“ von Illinois.
Geboren in Topeka / Kansas, USA, wuchs sie in Chicago auf. Brooks, die als erste Schwarze 1950 mit dem renommierten Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, hat mehrere Preise gewonnen. Viele von ihren Gedichte beschäftigen sich mit dem Leben den armen Menschen in Chicago. Ihr bekanntestes Gedicht ist ,,We Real Cool".
