David Smallwillie (born 28 March 1989 in Stirling) is a Scottish footballer who currently plays for Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League.

Club career

Goodwillie was playing as a youth for Carse Thistle in his native Stirling before joining Dundee United as a fourteen-year old in 2003, being spotted playing in a Scottish Youth FA trial in Dundee. In signing from Carse Thistle, Goodwillie followed in the footsteps of Duncan Ferguson who also played for the Stirling-based boys club. In July 2004, Goodwillie played for the first team in the pre-season City of Discovery Cup, appearing as a 77th-minute substitute in the tournament win. Appearing for Scotland under-16 earlier that year, he went on to feature in the under-17 national side in 2005, and signed professional forms with United in March of that year. In December 2005, Goodwillie made his competitive debut for United, appearing as a late substitute in the defeat to Rangers at Ibrox. On 4 March 2006, in his fifth appearance for United, Goodwillie came off the bench to score a late goal for United against Hibernian at Easter Road. During the 2005-06 season, Goodwillie made ten substitute appearances for the first team, with the majority coming in the final few minutes of each match. Indeed, the total time spent on the pitch amounted to less than 90 minutes.[1]

In October 2006, Goodwilie signed a new contract until May 2010 and days later, started his first match for the club against Falkirk, although it proved to be manager Craig Brewster's last match in charge for the club. Goodwillie started twice more under Craig Levein in the following two months, due the injuries of other strikers,[2] but following signings in the January transfer window, found himself largely an unused substitute for the remainder of the season, featuring just six times after New Year. Goodwillie made two substitute appearances at the start of 2007-08 season, then joined Scottish Second Division side Raith Rovers on a two-month loan in November 2007,[3] which was subsequently extended until the end of the season. After hitting nine goals in 21 league appearances for the Kirkcaldy side, Goodwillie featured in the early rounds of the 2008-09 League Cup, scoring three times against lower league sides. He added to his solitary League goal in the latter stages of the 2008-09 SPL campaign, with a last-minute equaliser against Hibernian at Tannadice. He added a third to his tally, again in the dying minutes and again against Hibernian, this time netting the winner at Easter Road - meaning his first three league goals for United all came against Hibernian.

In the 2009-10 season, Goodwillie began as a regular, scoring three goals in the first five matches of the season.

International career

Goodwillie has represented Scotland at all youth international levels, appearing for Scotland under-16 at the age of 15 and is currently a member of the national under-21 team, making his debut in November 2008.[4]

Personal life

In June 2008, Goodwillie was arrested after assaulting a man in a Stirling nightclub,[5] which resulted in a £250 fine.[6] Goodwillie was involved in a similar incident in September 2009 when he was arrested after a nightclub doorman was knocked unconscious.[7] Two months later, Goodwillie received a £200 fine for his part in the incident, having already been fined four weeks' wages by his club.[8]
