Petr Eben ist einer der führenden zeitgenössischen Kompomisten der tschechischen Republik. Er wurde am 22. Januar 1929 in Zamberk geboren und verbrachte seine Jugend in der mittelalterlichen, süd-böhmischen Stadt Cesky Krumlov. Dort studierte er Klavier, später auch Violoncello und Orgel. Nach den schweren Jahren der Deutschen Besatzung und des zweiten Weltkrieges wurde er in die Prager Akademie für Musik aufgenommen, wo er Klavier bei F. Rauch und Komposition bei Pavel Borkovec studierte.
Bereits 1955 bekam er einen Lehrauftrag am musikhistorischen Institut der Prager Karls-Universität. 1978-79 war er Professor für Komposition am Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. 1990 wurde er Professor für Komposition an der Akademie für aufführende Künste in Prag and Präsident der Prager Frühlings-Festivals. Als Künstler ist er auch mit eigenen Aufführungen aktiv, besonders als improvisierender Pianis und Organist, doch der Schwerpunkt seines Schaffens ist das Komponieren.
Petr Eben schrieb eine Vielzahl unterschiedlichster Werke aller Genres, so z.B. das Oratorium Apologia Socratus, das Ballett Fluch und Segen (Kletby a dobroreceni, geschrieben für das Holland Festival 1983), die symphonischen Orchesterwerke Nachtstunden (Nocni hodiny) und Prager Nocturne (Prazske nokturno, für die Wiener Philharmoniker), das 2. Orgelkonzert für die Einweihung der neuen Orgel von Radio Wien, die Messe Missa cum populo für das Avignon Festival, das Oratorium Heilige Symbole (Posvatna znameni) für die Salzburger Kathedrale, sowie die Kirchenoper Jeremias.
