Plácido Domingo (* 21. Januar 1941 in Madrid) ist ein spanischer Opern-Sänger (Tenor). Er gehört neben Pavarotti und Carreras zu den Drei Tenören.
Leben
Domingo wurde am 21. Januar 1941 in Madrid geboren, wuchs aber ab 1949 in Mexiko auf. Er debütierte dort schon 1961. Von 1962-1964 war er mit seiner Frau Marta (Sopran) in Israel tätig, und 1968 sang er erstmals an der Met in New York. Domingo ist in allen großen Opernhäusern der Welt aufgetreten. Er gilt als einer der größten und vielseitigsten lebenden Tenöre. Im Mittelpunkt seines breiten Repertoires steht das italienische Fach, vor allem Opern von Giuseppe Verdi und Giacomo Puccini. Eine seiner Parade-Rollen ist der "Othello", welche von Franco Zeffirelli mit ihm verfilmt wurde. Daneben hat er sich auch als Wagner-Sänger profiliert, speziell als "Lohengrin" und "Parsifal".
In den neunziger Jahren trat er zusammen mit Luciano Pavarotti und José Carreras (Die drei Tenöre) wiederholt und mit Erfolg in großen Arenen auf.
Neben der Direktion der Oper von Washington, D.C. übernahm Domingo im Jahre 2000 auch die künstlerische Leitung der Oper von Los Angeles. Er ist zunehmend auch als Dirigent tätig, so beispielsweise an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin.
2003 wurde Domingo der World Award in der Kategorie "World Achievement Award" verliehen.
