Yury Shulman (born April 29, 1975 in Belarus, USSR) is an American chess grandmaster. In his youth, he studied under the guidance of Tamara Golovey, Albert Kapengut, and Boris Gelfand. He achieved the grandmaster title in 1995. He has been rated as high as 2614 by the Elo rating system. He has a Bachelor's degree in computer science as well as an MBA.
After moving to the USA in 1999, he has consistently remained among the top American players. He tied for first in the 2001 World Open. In 2006, Shulman was the winner of the US Open Chess Championship.
Yury Shulman International Chess School
He is the founder of the Yury Shulman International Chess School. Yury and his volunteer community are privileged to be able to use chess as a medium for philanthropic causes. In 2006, this included visits to, and book drives for, Chicago public schools, and contributions of a portion of the proceeds from camps and tournaments to non-profit entities the world over.
